I have this huge bird cage and was wondering
« on: June 11, 2007, 12:51:10 PM »
or thinking about planting something it in.  Maybe some type of vine in a hanging basket.  I paid a couple hundred dollars for it and just hate to throw it out.  I don't want another bird, this has been sitting outside for a couple years now.  It seems to have made it to the driveway, getting closer to sitting out to the garbage.

Ya'll have any suggestions.

That's a nice little cage! I would have to bribe it out of you if I was closer. LOL! :) I would think you could sell it pretty easily but you could probably set a vining plant in it and something like a cute garden critter too.

Oh Kim, I wish you could have seen the bird cage I saw with plants in it at a garden center I went to recently!  There were all kinds of shade plants I believe, ferns, coleus--the door was left open on it--it was absolutely beautiful!  Made me wish I had one!  Go for it,,,don't throw it in the trash!! 8-)~

My SIL has a cage about the same size as yours. She spray painted it antique white, put in a few vining plants. On the  top outside of the cage she used some adhesive to glue on 2 beautiful butterflies and a matching bow :)

I'd bury it up to the bottom shelf of base (to be secure in ground), then plant perennial ivy around it and train it to grow up the legs and vine around the cage exterior. Then, put a hanging basket (hung from inside top of cage) overflowing with flowering annuals inside. It could work also with Clematis, or any vining plant. If you are an instant gratification gal like myself, Morning Glorys grow FAST and would cover it in no time....

Oh, that is pretty!  You could do all sorts of things suggested here with that.

I had an antique one at one time. It hung on a stand. I wired little fake birds to the perches, then put flowers around it. It was cute.

Hey just a thought. Ever see those toy Parrots, that are battery operated. When ever you talk it records and then plays back what ya said. Wire one of those babies in there.  lol

And if you still don't come up with ideas you like you can always give it away through FreeCycle to someone who needs a bird cage...

Aw shucks, don't freecycle... send that puppy to me! I want a bird.

Anyway, I think you should just keep it as it is. Maybe put an orchid inside. It's pretty enough all by itself. It just needs to find a home. Maybe a little corner somewhere that has nothing?

Worst case scenario, get another bird. But don't ditch that cage!

We pressure washed it last night.  The legs need to be painted.  It has some rust on it.  The top part of the cage lifts off, so it won't be a problem to paint the bottom.  After Father's Day, I'm going to put it back on the deck so I can look at it and think and figure out what to do.  I do miss having a bird, but then again when we owned the Conure it kind of burnt us.
