I found a newt
« on: June 26, 2007, 10:29:25 AM »
This little fella was hiding under 'Poached Egg' plant
I moved him onto the leaf of a water lily and he disappeared into the pond :)

Very cool!

It's one of those things that you know exists, but never expect to see, outside of a nature center textbook.

Too cute!  I found a little salamander/newt under a rock last week, but just left him where he was because I didn't want to capture him.  He was a darker color, but looked a lot like yours.  I'm sure there are a lot of varieties.   :)

I've ordered a digital camera, so hopefully next time I find one I can get a picture of him before letting him go.  O0

Would you believe that I took this little chap and set him on a Water Lily leaf and thought 'what a great picture' and I had left the camera back in the garage :(
When I came back he had gone .......

What a little cuttie! I have some here that look like a miniture aligator with a very long bright blue tail. I've been told there harmless so I let them be to eat the bugs. I have only seen them around the rocks on the banks but never in the water. And of coarse I never have the camara handy when I see one!
I'm just happier outside!

Debbie, those would be Skinks and they aren't aquatic but they are harmless. They do eat bugs.

Lots of newts here, alas not in my pond. I had one in an aquarium for about eight years and put him in the pond when it was done and never saw him again. :(

Use to have newts before the pond.  We live next to a creek where they live.  See a lot less of them now that the neighborhood has filled up  :-\  Use to have lots of skinks (?) too but they decided to move away when too many people moved into their neighborhood.  'Miss watching them stretch out on rocks worshipping the sun  8)

I'm scared of anything that crawls. It is pretty though.
