Jack-in-the-pulpit & Punks too
« on: June 29, 2007, 10:12:07 AM »
Well we have a Jack-in-the-pulpit, we didn't plant it it just came.
I read that it is a difficult plant to grow even under the best conditions.
Does anyone have one and do you think it will come back next year? LeeAnne?

We also have two punks ready to pop. The head groundskeeper is delighted,
he rescued the punks from his local fishing hole.

We have another punk plant on the other side of the pond, the punk that is on it, is from last year...
the birds are using it for nesting material.

The punks ready to pop... :)

The punks are planted in a pot that is buried ground level, they are next to the walking stick tree
and in back of the lotus. The punks are over eight feet tall.

The other punk is on the left side, planted in the pond, the birds have pick it apart for
nesting material.

It should be perennial. I don't grow them. Nice photos of an outstanding garden.

Thanks everyone, It was a perfect picture taking day...a little overcast. The bright sun washes out the color and
an overcast sky allows the colors to pop...

Here's Max, our Grandpuppy. we've been vacation sitting all week for our son. He's the most adorable
little thing, I'm going to miss him when he goes home.  :'(

He's been getting tips from CJ and taking his security rounds seriously.   :)

He always looks so serious.

Your pond is beautiful. What you are refering to as punks? is that the same as cattails? I have always wanted to get a dog like that. He's sooo cute!
I'm just happier outside!

yes, cattails. They are very intelligent dogs and train easily.
They also have a sweet disposition.

Joanne, your grounds are looking grand as usual. The grounds keeper must be doing their jobs. Maybe Sr. four legged grounds keeper will teach the grandpup his job.

We have  "Jack". It is done blossoming but the leaves are still green and nice.  We have had it on the northeast side of the house in a flower garden for several years. It never gets any sun but doesn't seem to mind.

Just looked up Jack-in-the-pulpit.  What a pretty plant it is...almost like an orchid or slipper type plant (sorry don't know plants well except for the ones I like  :o ).

Learning new names - I've been punked  ;D ;D

Got lots of cattails  ::)

Our native Jacks are pretty easy.  It is the fancy Asian species that are a little trickier.

I don't think your plant is an Arisaema, though.  It looks like a cousin, Pinellia:

http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/shade_gardening/100347

Should be very easy...if not a little vigorous!

I'm trying Pinellia tripartita 'Dragon Tails' this year.  Looks just like your's, except it variegated green and gold.  Very cool  O0

Cliff and Joann,
The plant does not look like a jack-in -the pulpit to me, it looks like Green Dragon (Arisaema dracontium).  My advice is to dig it up immediately and dispose of it.  It is the most invasive plant I ever introduced into my yard.  From one plant, I had at least a thousand in only three years over a 50 foot square area and i have been trying to eradicate it for at least the last seven years and still i keep finding them hiding under other plants.  Instead obtain Jack in the Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum), a much prettier plant, also perennial and native to your locale.  It will spread, but is easily controlled, unlike the prolific Arisaema dracontium.

Thanks John, Here's another photo. I read up on the Green Dragon and it does look like it.
Now we have a problem...did I ever tell you how much the head guy around here loves invasive  ::)
and not to mention how stubborn he is!
I told him we should take it out cause it's so invasive... and he said, no I'm not taking it
out, the day I can't beat a plant is the day I retire my claw. LOL...tune in next year

another shot from today

Joann,

It is not an Arisaema dracontium. Definitely not. I'm sure that in NC it could be invasive, but around here it is a choice native woodland plant. Swink & Wilhelm gave it a C7 status.

Arisaema dracontium (Green Dragon)-

Arisaema triphyllum (Jack in the Pulpit)-

I think Josh hit the nail on the head. Pinellia.  O0 Maybe you could get a close up of the leaves?
I have a Trillium grandiflorum that looks similar.

I've been attempting to restore my little woodland, and I'm slowly seeing the Arisaemas come back.

The leaf is wrong for Arisaema dracontium, but I'm mainly judging by the flower and the long, upright "whip".

Josh is correct, it is a  Pinellia.  BUT! It is one and the same plant that I have been fighting the last 7 or so years.  The person who gave it to me identified it as "Green Dragon" and I never looked it up to be certain.  The plant you have is definetely the one that tried to take over my yard.

Here's a pic of a potted one.

And here's one that is hiding under some low hanging limbs.. Gotta go get the Roundup!!!
