newbie trying to start viviporous lilies

Yesterday I joined American Ponders.  I was up until 1:00 am last night looking at all the wonderful photos on this site!  Thank you all for sharing.

I am trying to propagate Queen of Siam from its vips.  I used the Victoria web site as a guide but I have a number of questions.  I tried the method of putting the vips in pots with nutrient rich soil, 90 degree water and 18 hours of light from two 120 watt grow lights.  The leaves grew well but most of the plants are not putting out roots, just the leaves.  I am also getting LOTS of thick green algae that adheres to the plants & the dirt.  The water is absolutely clear but the algae "clumps" are very dark green and full of air.  The algae sometimes actually causes the plantlets to float up out of the dirt, bringing the dirt up too..... I'm, sure partly because there are no roots on the plantlets.  Then I tried using plain unclumping unscented kitty litter with fert tabs down an inch or so and it seemed a little better but the end results were the same.

The I tried another method mentioned on the Victoria site and just floated the vips, upside down, on the surface of the heated & lit water.  That seems to be working better and faster as far as the root development goes.  I have a couple that are getting nice roots.  However, the roots are growing down and the leaves are trying to grow up.  Sounds logical, right?  So, what happens when I turn the plantlet right side up (remember, now the plant is floating upside down on the water) and the roots are growing up over the crown and the leaves are growing down where the roots should be?  I'm guessing I can't pot it with the roots going down because then the crown of the newly forming tuber will be down also.  I would appreciate any suggestions.

I belong to a local watergardening group in Tucson.  We fund water features for educational purposes in schools and parks.  We raise money by having a big plant sale in May to which we all donate out divides of every plant you can imagine.  I thought it would be great if I could donate some Queen of Siam since they fetch a pretty good price.  No one has ever donated a tropical before and buying them for the sale really cuts the profits.  I am also trying to grow some other tropicals by seed, but that's another and less successful story since I don't even seem to be able to get any seeds from my spent flowers.

Our pond is a swimming pool-to-pond conversion.  It is 5500 gallons.  The exposed part of the pool is 14'x16'x3'.  The rest of the pool is under a deck made of "recycled grocery bag" wood.  The whole conversion is absolutely delightful.  I will post pictures when I figure out how to do it.

I am land and water gardener.  I am excited to be in this group.

Hi Casey.

Welcome to the forum!

To touch on two of your points of concern.
With your plantlets not developing roots, try planting in just plain sand with just a tiny bit of phosphorus fertilizer, the last number in the NPK (nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus) combination. Phosphorous and Potassium promote strong root growth while Nitrogen stimulates green growth. Part of the reason you are getting so much algae growth would be too much fertilizer or organic matter for the algae to feed on.

As for the roots and new pads growing upside down from flipping the pads, you can easily turn them right side up and pin the new plantlet to a cup of soil or sand and the new roots will find their way down as the new plant grows.

MCP, Thanks for the welcome.  This looks like it will be a very interesting group.  I may have to wait until after Christmas to figure out the picture posting thing.  I still have an Albert Greenberg blooming but it may disappear tomorrow night, which is forecast for 31 degrees.  We've had a lovely warm fall and I even have some hardies still blooming... pathetically, but still blooming.  I quit fertilizing in late October.

I managed to grab 4 or 5 QoS vips before the weather started turning colder. All I did was to weight them down in the bottom of a large tub and put my reef light for my old aquarium over them ( along with a few snails to control algae ) and they are throwing pads and roots, hopefully I get a few starters; looks like 4 or 5; only time will tell. so far so good though.

I have lots, probably 15 or so, and today I took them all out of the pots and just set them afloat in the tub like the ones that sem to be growing roots.  As I mentioned, they all have leaves but the potted ones have no roots and the floating ones do have roots.  I am pretty much following Sean's suggestions and turoials now.  I picked some more vips today and am thinking about getting the last leaves tonight before we get the freeze that is predicted.  If this is successful i may focus more on viviporous lilies next summer and we have been thinking about solar heating the pond someday.  I think my watergardening might be stupendous if the water stayed warmer.  It's all an adventure anyway.

Casey as I am sure many will agree Ponding is a cross between an obsession and therapy. I think it was Sean who told me just to weight them down and they will root. So far mine are doing great. Keep us posted on the progress and even take a few pics to share. If you need a great "instant, resizing tool for tool for your pictures you can use VSO, Very intuitive.  If you reduce them to 640 x 480 they usually (99 percent of the time) load right up.

I've noticed that activity has slowed down a little now that it's cold, and people's ponds are dormant.  So be sure to keep checking back, and, once it warms up again, there will be lots of new posts to read, and lots more photos to enjoy.
