Anybody else hate Plumbago?
« on: September 03, 2006, 11:36:20 AM »
This hedge can be so attractive, especially as blue is a colour I am trying for everywhere I can. It grows like a weed however, and is so sticky, that after just innocently passing by, and looks like a furry blue snowman.  Sticks to the dogs too, and hence my bed ends up as a gardening project too after they run indoors. Grrr.

Some years back, while doing plant research on the internet for unusual plants that would do well for me, I came across this seeming delight - Plumbago. An evergreen, with showy blue flowers thoughout the summer, a South African native that tolerated low water. I was in love. I ordered huge numbers of this miracle dreram plant.

Imagine my horror, when describing this 'find' to Sean, and he says - "But that is the hedge you hate". Tool ate to cancel the order, the package went straight into the trash upon arrival, without being opened.

It's strange how there always seems to be a draw back to the perfect anything.
It is a very striking plant with it's dark green foliage and beautiful blue flowers. I'm always looking for blue too.

yes Maryvonne i sought blues too and planted morning glorys.  they almost ate my citrus trees.  I am winning the war, but it will never end.  Eternal vigilence lest morning glorys eat the place.

Jerry, I am having the same problem with our native white perennial morning glory.
I hate that f-ing plant! &-) >:( >:(-

They sell perennial Plumbago here, which is different, but I feel the same about it.
It's a thug in the gardens, invasive, and when it's not blooming, looks FUGLY. :P
Not allowed in my garden, or any plant that fits the description.

The tropical Plumbago is fine here cuz it dies in the winter.  O0

The perennial Plumbago is not invasive here for me, I love it, it blooms a long time and the foliage is a nice reddish dark green contrasts well with the gray plants near it. The tropical one is also a favorite of mine.

Not sure what MikeW means by sticky? I don't remember it being sticky. I haven't grown one in years but was planning on getting one for the greenhouse.

When I was a kid we had a huge Plumbago bush in the backyard.  It was kind of hollowed out underneath and I thought it was a great hiding place when playing hide & seek.  However my secret hiding place didn't last long.  Those darn sticky flowers stuck all over the back of my shirt and thus the other kids quickly figured out where I was hiding...   Darn Plumbago.....

The plant has burrs that get stuck to everything, especially Poodles. I have pulled hundreds of them off Mike's dogs and my t-shirts when I brush by.

Cheers,

Yuk - with a long haired puppy I don't like any plant with burrs . . . . and the grass in Florida all seems to have burrs . . . . hate 'em!

Fondled one at the plant sale last Sunday. The flowers were sticky. I never noticed that about them before. Guess I won't be putting one in my new greenhouse.

Ceanothus is growing next to the garage... which is in a bushy shape (laziness), but my friend has 'trained' hers along a fence.  Anyway... adds quite a nice splash of blue to the garden.
