I have got to get these things out of there but I dont want to kill them but really need to move the rose hedges I am going to put there before winter dont I?? Will it kill them to dig them up now? Or can the roses wait till after frost and these die down.. I cant wait to see my house again!

Tink,

Are you going to take your elephant ears up and store them for the winter? Or, chance it by leaving them in the ground. (because if you were going to store them.  Mine went crazy like that too, they are just huge.  I've been bringing boxes home from work to store them like last year.  I took them and dug them up, then cut the leaves and stems off.  Then I wrapped them in newspaper, put them in boxes and stored them in my crawl space under the house.  I'm afraid to leave them out all winter, it would be my luck we would have a very cold winter and they would freeze on me.  I do my banana's and canna's the same way.

When they harvest them for sale, they just dig them up, chop the leaves off and clean as much dirt as possible off.  I've never had a bulb I bought at the oriental market fail to sprout.  Shouldn't hurt them at all to dig them and force dormancy now.

As Teresa has stated, cut the leaves off. Even if you transplanted them, the leaves would die back anyhow. I bought bulbs at Wal-Mart and didn't plant them for two years and they are still growing.

Happy ponding,

If you think that your question is dumb, imagine how totally stupid you will look if you don't ask it.

Yes to cutting off the big leaves.  I let the smaller ones remain.
