Anyone know a source of cheap(er) bulk flake food ? The price of the small containers at the pet stores is ridiculous.

I don't think I have ever seen flake food in bulk packages. You might have to switch to pellet food. The pellets are small enough with a lot of brands that even 2" goldfish can eat them.

I made my own fish food and used Mazuri gel foods last year. I saved money and the fish love it. I figure why feed a grain based commercial food when it's not what they would eat in the wild. Colors brightened and the fish were more active and healthy last year.

Kay great link, so did you make up a recipe, or use one of the ones on the site? Sound pretty easy to make, how long would you say a recipe lasts?

I used the Mackerel and Greens recipe but it can be adapted to whatever you want to add. It is easy to make but the first time or so I had to make several batches to get the gelatin mixture right. If you are going to try it do very small batches until you figure out how much gelatin and how to get it to set firmly.
It makes 4 cups and it lasts my goldies about 2 months. I don't feed them heavily and I don't have lots of fish. They love it. I alternate with the Mazuri gel food to increase the nutritional aspect. I'm going to add it to my foods for pond fish next summer to see what they do with it.
