Question about natural algae controll..
« on: January 27, 2008, 06:50:59 AM »
 My daughter raises lyretail mollies, and always has "culls", can I put these in my pond to controll algae? {:-P;;

And would they get along with the fantails that are already in my pond? ::)

Thanks,

Vicky

I put mollies in one of my ponds. It is about a 600 gallon and about 10 inches deep. I still have algae but I don't worry about it too much. But remember you have to catch them and bring them inside unless you live were it does not get real cold. I use a minnow trap to help. Right now they are in my basement in an aquarium and a 100 gallon pond. This spring I will be putting some of them in tubs.

Not sure how they would control the algae.....their waste would only cause more it seems to me like....algae has to be feed in order to grow...to control it...good filtration is a must, low stocking, and weekly water changes help alot to control it....and when its really bad grab the rake ;D.....

I have goldfish, koi, and a few snails (the large ones from PetSmart... fish seem to have eaten all the small ones).  I bought several of those electric ice-blue, spotted mollies, but they never lasted long - either birds, 'coons, or they don't like Houston summers.

Between all that, I have no problem with algae.  I think the fish spend a good part of their day picking it off the sides of the pond liner.
