I won first prize in a karaoke competition!
« on: January 31, 2008, 06:47:14 PM »
Last night I won first prize in a karaoke contest ($50).  A little background - I am fairly quiet and conservative.

My friend ("the Fish") typed out a blog on it today (Dave the G. is my karaoke name):

Gullifty's Underground, Wednesday night karaoke. The room was dark and filled with regulars and newbies anxious to entertain with there personal song stylings.

At a table down front, sat Dave the G and the Fish, munching on a meatball and chicken cheesesteak sub respectively. Dave the G., with slips at the ready, was prepared for the start of the night's activities.
The Fish sat undecided, leafing through the food encrusted song-book, looking for that first selection.

The Wednesday night karaoke contest awaited. As usual the crowd muddled through the first three hours, managing to only get in two selections per person thanks to the rapid fire skills of KJ's Frank and Vicki.

At last it arrived! Tonight's contest was to be "Song Unseen". The line up was formulated by our hosts and the Fish was thrown to the wolves with the number one slot. Eleven singers were to follow.

The Fish was given two choices, a Carole King song or "The Lido Shuffle". In a panic, he went for the obvious and laid down a somewhat mediocre performance of "Lido". The crowd response came, but was barely audible above the chorus of crickets.

With silent, motionless resolve, Dave the G awaited the arrival of his number three slot. At last the moment of truth, and the G strolled to the stage uncertain of his fate.

Vicki handed the microphone to the G and announced, "Your choices are, "No No Man" by Ringo Starr, or "You've Got to Fight For Your Right to Party" by the Beastie Boys". The shouts from the audience began as they urged the G to go for the song of their preference.

Beads of sweat began to glisten on his brow as he mentally wrestled with the dilemma before him. Finally his mind saw the perverse opportunity and he muttered into the microphone, "Beastie Boys". Cheers rang out from the crowd and seconds later the music started.

The G began his vocals and without pause, he threw caution to the wind and released his inner BeastieBoy. As the song progressed the crowd began to stomp and cheer and sing along. The room was alive as the G rocked the house like he had never done before.

He finished and Vicki called for audience reaction on three. "One, Two,Three", and the accolades from the crowd were deafening. Nine singers later, the smoke from the vocal Armageddon cleared and , yes, Dave the G emerged victorious for his killer rendition of The Beastie Boys tune.

The worm has definitely turned.

I couldn't carry a tune if you gave me a bucket.  I would be totally embarrassed to stand up in front of a group and sing.....if you call my noise singing.....  Congratulations!

Believe it or not, I only had one beer at 9:30 and I sang in the competition at 12:30.

I started singing karaoke last May.  My friends and I treat it like a singers club - sing at least 1x a week, usually 2x.  We all sing pretty decently to pretty well.  I have about 100 songs that I can sing.

I was asked in my class (acting) to sing.  Holy cow I thought, I have a tin ear.  her idea was to make us ready for anything.  I remembered Rex Harrison talk- singing in "My Fair Lady" I talk sung "Chatanooga Choo Choo"  Ive done it in the shower a hundred times.  The lyrics were new for many of the classmates.  They were impressed and overlooked my being off key.  I knew the words and that was enough.

"Can you afford to board the Chatanooga Choo Choo, I've got my fir and just a trifle to spare!"

I guess I can sing OK. I have been told lots of times I have a good voice. I had several years of piano, was always in choirs in school and church over the years. I know I have a good ear for harmony because can easily alternate between soprano, alto, and tenor. But I am handicapped by fear. So would NEVER do karaoka. The closer the group that I'm singing in gets to 4, one for each section, the more frightened I become and lose quality.

Jerry:
Pardon me, boy
Is that the Chattanooga choo choo?
Track twenty-nine
Boy, you can gimme a shine
I can afford
To board a Chattanooga choo choo
I've got my fare
And just a trifle to spare

You leave the Pennsylvania Station 'bout a quarter to four
Read a magazine and then you're in Baltimore
Dinner in the diner
Nothing could be finer
Than to have your ham an' eggs in Carolina

When you hear the whistle blowin' eight to the bar
Then you know that Tennessee is not very far
Shovel all the coal in
Gotta keep it rollin'
Woo, woo, Chattanooga there you are

There's gonna be
A certain party at the station
Satin and lace
I used to call "funny face"
She's gonna cry
Until I tell her that I'll never roam
So Chattanooga choo choo
Won't you choo-choo me home?
Chattanooga choo choo
Won't you choo-choo me home?

Now I can't get that out of my head.

Esther, It's taped up in my shower.  I am ready!  My voice is fine, I just can't carry a tune! :'(

My version says "can you afford" instead of I can afford.  I googled it.
