Check out this butt.....
« on: September 19, 2006, 10:00:44 AM »
I bought a smoker recently and over the weekend I BBQ's two 8lb pork butts.  They took just over 24 hours in the smoker to be cooked just right for pulled pork.  Below is one of the butts prior to pulling.  It practically fell apart in my hands when I lifted it.

This is what it looks like after pulling...

And here's my pork pulled sandwich with lots of BBQ sauce on top..  The rest of the meat went into freezer ziplocks for future good eats....

The meat was so tender, juicy and tasty that I thought I died and went to heaven @O@

Brian: I bought the Bradley Digital smoker.  It's pretty much a "set & forget it" smoker.  Although those rack rotations every four hours were a bit of a pain, especially at 1:00am and 5:00am :o

OK, now I am hungry. With my culinary talents, let's see, hmmmmm, toast or something by Kelloggs?

Are these new talents you are picking up in retirement?

Cheers,

Mike

Good job Mikey O0 O0

Makes me want to get my butt in gear and start smoking some salmon. I have a wild turkey to smoke before winter sets in too. I did just find my wood chips when I cleaned out the garage last weekend. I have a charcoal smoker. I have never done a pork roast though. I did see some on sale at the store on my lunch for $1.68 a pound. Maybe I should go and get one and give it a try. They were probably 4 lbs.
Did you do a rub of some sort first?

That looks scrummy O0... Your meat portions are so much more humungous than over here... but then we are seriously into vegetables (I had veggie withdrawal symptons after Florida this year)

Mike: I saw this smoker a year of two before I retired and promised me I would get it upon retirement.  I try to keep my word... :D

Did you do a rub of some sort first?
Steve: Yes.  It had a dozen or so different ingredients.  I scored it and then smeared yellow mustard over the entire thing.  I then heavily sprinkled on the rub, wrapped it up and left it in the fridge overnight.  I also put a pound of bacon on the top rack to drip down onto the two butts.  The meat was so tender that I should probably call it "tugged pork" instead of pulled pork (8:-)   Smoked turkey and salmon O0  Now that does sound good.

Kaz:  You couldn't get enough veggies with your meals while here?  Too bad you didn't visit a Soup Plantation restaurant of something similar during your visit in order to quench your taste for veggies.

That looks so good!  We used to have a neighbor that smoked meat outside all summer long, OMG, the delicious smells!  I have since looked for a smoker in stores, but couldn't find one.  I may have to go online to find one.

I was speaking with my daughter who lives in Oregon and I told her that several women had complimented me on my butt with comments ranging from "that looks so awesome" to "that looks soooo GOOD!"  Her response was something like, "Yeah, right dad.  In your dreams."
