What's the name of this bloomer?
« on: February 01, 2008, 02:32:09 PM »
After seeing Mikey's fire color blooming plant I was reminded of the plant I have blooming now.

Please see photo enclosed.  I know I planted these bulbs maybe Fall 2 years ago in the large pot I keep on the edge of the stoop where there use to be a railing.  I know I have the label describing it but I don't know where it is in my jungle.  This is the first time I've see flowers on it.  The last 2 years I only saw leaves leaving to believe they were gladiolas.  So it was a surprise this past week to see such pretty flowers growing that I do not recall planting  :D

Do you know what they're named?

Hi Annette,

They are a variety of Crocosmia, which variety I am unsure.

Cheers,

I checked out Sean's reference but couldn't find the plant that looked like mine.  Mike got it right.  I finally decided to search through my plant labels and found the picture and name that correlates with Mike.

I guess it is a S. African corm (not bulb) and can become invasive through seed pods.  I also Googled the name to find out it needs a couple of years to produce flowers from a new corm.  Good thing I didn't toss the plant after the first 2 years when it was only green leaves.

Very similar looking and I think they are in the crocosmia family.  I actually like crocosmia better because the flowers last longer in my opinion.  It's kind of ironic because I saw Annette and her DH at a plant sale this morning and right there blooming in front of us, and for sale, was a Chasmanthe..... :D

Michael is always inviting me to go with him to this sale, that sale and some other sale.  I keep telling him I can't afford him as a friend.  I spent $40 at Green Thumb and Michael spent nada...... although he said he's going back tomorrow to get a couple of the saucer magnolias.

I bought a bulb plant at the UCI sale for $7.  While doing a Google search to learn about the bulb I found it on Telos Rare Bulbs selling for $30 a bulb.  My pot had three bulbs growing in it  @O@

lol Mike, I'm guessing everyone's out to make you spend $$   How many trees did you get at Green Thumbs?  Great deal at UCI!  You never know what you get from the attractive plants.  I got a plant for $7 too.  I'm wondering if it is the same plant.  I'll go check.

Telos is a great site.  This is the plant I got at UCI's Plant sale for $7:

Stenomesson  incarnatum - Apricot Form  ---- Each: $30.00
The leaves of this Stenomesson are light green, and the umbels of flared tubular
flowers are light apricot tipped green, each flower as long as 6”.  S. incarnatum
is extremely vigorous. Bolivia/Peru.  FEW AVAILABLE

One of the volunteers working the sale asked me if there was anything I like so I pointed at the demo plant and asked if there were any more for sale.  He had set aside one of this plant for himself.  He was very nice to let me buy it.

It has quite a few bulbs set in the pot too!  Is it possible you got the same plant?  ;D  I'll get a photo of it tomorrow.

Must be a relative that lives in hotter climates.

You see Crocosmia all over the place up here. Natural that us Pacific Northwesterners would think that is what it is.
