Sanke
« on: August 10, 2008, 08:28:46 AM »
Sanke is the name the Japanese usually use for a white-red-black koi.
White is the basic color of the fish.
Red "steps" like a kohaku should be balanced front and back, side to side. There is no preferred pattern, but the goal is to be visually balanced.
The black patches should accent and emphasize the beauty of the koi, and not be distracting.
In this fish black is a supporting color - not a dominating color.

Sanke that are excessively red are "hana" or "aka" sanke - meaning the red is dominating the white.

@O@  Thank you for this lesson!  So if I see a koi with red, white and black I can point and say "and there you have a fine specimen of a Sanke"  :D

Is there a Japanese name for a solid color koi, no matter the color?  Red/orange and White only? (I'm thinking of my Jack koi) Sorry for so many questions but this could add more interest in my koi (mutts) pond.  ::)

Jack is a hokahu. At least I think so - I don't see any flecks of black in the photos.
A kohaku is a two color white fish. So white with red steps. The steps should be bold and not freckles, unless you have a special kind that looks like flower petals. The effect should be pleasing, but need not be well balanced. Some of the more energetic pattern types can be very desirable. Like the "inazuma" or lightning bolt pattern.

A single color koi could be called an ogon. In the USA because we do not value single color koi, we call them bait.  lol (that's a joke).
Some ogons have special names.
A black koi is called karasu (translates roughly to "crow").
A shiny white ogon is a purachina.
A shiny yellow ogon is a yamabuki.
But a matte yellow ogon is a kigoi.

In general, the extremely shiny koi are called harawaki - but it would not be correct to say a kigoi harawaki - that would be a yamabuki.

Many of the single color koi also have a reticulation (a darker or contrasting color just on th edges of the scales). Then you add matsuba to the name.

Another way to say single colored is muji. So aka muji is a solid red fish. The term does not imply quality, tho.
So aka muji is a single colored red fish that we would term bait. While beni goi means a deep red, beautiful single color red fish.

He's white with bold red steps and red freckles (that's the ish part) :D ;D

Thank you Sunbeam!  When I see some beautiful koi I will have an idea of their value in coloring.

For a Sanke to have any back traces on the head is not a good thing, it should be culled. thank goodness that peron who breed the 2nd Sanke in the 1st pic didn't follow those guidelines, Huh?  ::)
Thanks,
Rich
