The new pads came overnight, seem they have a local warehouse.
I got it done, very nasty job.   {nono}I need Mike Lowe (Rowe ?)
I can find no blockage!  I will cut off the 3" outlet pipe and see if hi pressure or wires will do it.
I will then replace pipe and hose bib.
It was a bear of a job.  I saw no plant roots at all!  Just in the first layer of pads.

Do I dare admit it???  The %$*#%&% knife valve was not in the proper position!

I figured it out when I awoke at 3:00 AM !  The valve is obscured now by Japanese Boxwood.
Not much of an excuse, I know. {nono} {nono}
There were roots only in the first layer of filter pads!
The pond is amost clear, it will be tomorrow!  sigh!

Jerry,
I had a like problem with my unit and along with discovering that I had broken the valve nob found that the rotating valve itself was scared due to friction.  In other words, after the internal valve stayed in the run position for extended periods of time, as it should do, became rather "stuck" due to grit and the pressure of the valve body against the housing.  During the necessary repairs due to my breaking the control nob I applied non-soluble water faucet lubricate to all areas of the valve that comes in to contact with other parts.  While you did not have any type of parts breakage or failure I would like to pass on a bit of additional information.  During the inspection of my unit I found that the main water shaft had cracked at the point where it mated with the main unit.  To repair this problem and to repair the breakage of the control nob shaft I used an epoxy made specifically for plastics.  The epoxy set in one hour and curred twenty four hours. The end result was perfect in that the repairs parts seemed as strong or stronger than the originals.  So in summary, if the occasions comes where you have to disassemble your unit for cleaning I would highly recommend the application of the non-water soluble lubricant (in grease form).  If repairs become necessary then the use of an epoxy specifically and exclusively formulated for plastics.  I obtained both products from Ace Hardware and will be more than happy to obtain the specific brand and product names.

Best regards and continued enjoyment with your pond.

Excellent info Louis!  I pray I never have that problem.  It will be rough getting at all the parts.
I think the reason for a knife valve is so there are 2 controls, lest one be faulty.  1. the hose type bib used for back flushing and, 2. the knife valve.  (Why not a ball valve?)
I have many talents, but mechanical skills is not one of them!  My wife is far more logical when it comes to mechanics!.
Thanks
