Oh Deer!
« on: May 02, 2008, 05:04:05 PM »
On the way back from dinner got hit by a deer. Loudest noise I have heard since my last rock concert.
Slammed into my driver side door, slid down the side, dented both doors, back rear quarter panel,
took off the wheel well, license plate holder (and license)  and and other molding and pieces that got in the way.
Back bumper bent and pulled away from the body. Trailer hitch thingy came off.
Deer took forever to die flopping around in the road, while we waited for the cops in the misty, cold rain.
Poor Jamie had to see the whole thing. Deer gore and hair still all over the Jeep.
Jeep took it like a tank though. Doors still work, windows intact.
Thank goodness we weren't in the PT Cruiser!

Jamie just left with Bill to get her Softball Team photos taken.
I am home with a bit of a jaw ache, headache and backache.  :o

Pix tomorrow.

Terrible experience.  I'm not certain what the law is on deer strikes here.  Do you report them and stand by for the cops?

Yeah, cop came.
My hubby is on the local Police Advisory, so we know 'em all by name.
Officer Rogers came, put the deer out of its misery, and then did the report.
My mom came before the cop showed up and stayed with me while Bill took off with Jamie in my moms car.
(this happened 1/4 mile from my moms)

Joyce, that was a terrible experience for you both. Especially Jamie.

In January, my oldest son was using our car because his had died and was coming down a back road about 6:45 in the morning when a deer came out from some trees and whammed my car on the passenger side front bumper, headlight, fender and radiator. The car was totaled because it was a '99 Pontiac Sunfire, a little throwaway. I just finally got a replacement a week ago.

Joyce, Terrible expirence. Can relate have hit several in PA. Don't know about your insurance but ours does not charge a deductable for deer damage. You might want to check it out. Just glad you and Jamie were not hurt. :)

Wow, Sorry about your car damage, but I'm glad you're OK. There have been some terrible (fatal) deer hits around here. Hubby clipped one but only lost his side mirror.

When my SIL hit one in Colorado Springs, she waited around with the police until an organization got there who butchers the meat and donates it to the food pantry.

The deer probably got taken home by someone.
They usually don't go to waste around here.
I wouldn't be surprised if the cop took it home.

That's awful Joyce, I'm surely glad you and Jamie weren't injured.  Hate to hear about the damage to your new jeep and the death of the deer.  There are so many around here, I meet up with them a lot when I'm in the woods.  They are always moving through our fields into the woods or fence rows.  Wonder why so many of them are moving right now.  They aren't breeding, but should be getting ready to give birth to their babies.

Here I was expecting to see deer grazing in your yard or something.
Sorry to hear that you hit a deer. they usually do lots of damage, which is one of the reasons for longer deer season here.
Way too many. Also in Wisconsin you can take the deer with you-(to eat)
Too bad that Jamie had to see the whole thing, but then again, a good life lesson.

Deer are the #1 reason I don't do much night riding anymore. On a motorcycle, could be deadly.

Steve, just last year a night rider was killed here.
No one even knew until a dog walker found the man and his motorcycle in the bushes at the side of the road...and deer gore.
He had been there at least 2 days.  :'(

Not telling Jamie, but I am pretty sure it was a pregnant doe.
When I was picking up the wheel well off the road, and the other parts of the Jeep off the road, I had to walk by the deer.
This was about 4-5 telephone poles back behind my car, far enough so Jamie couldn't see much details of the deer.
I could see her stomach moving, and it looked like she was pregnant and there was a baby kicking around inside.
I was SOOO freaking out, but had to locate my missing license plate. Bill was walking around too looking for it and yelled at me not to look at her.
Guess I was frozen in place for a while. The deer was watching me, laying on her side and panting. Bills yell snapped me out of it.
This was all on a road called the North Road by locals, but Route 48 on the map.
Right where we hit the deer (it actually ran into us) was where it becomes a 4 lane from a 2 lane.
So I was walking around picking up the pieces on my Jeep in the striped area as the 2 lanes branch out into 4.
Cars were whizzing by on each side, misty-foggy-drizzling cold at dusk...not very safe cuz a lot of cars use the striped area to pass slower cars before they merge into the 2 lane area.
(we were headed the other way) 2 cars stopped and asked if everyone was OK... both were Hispanic. Nice people.  8)

I'm so glad your family is OK.

Around here it is so dry that the deer are looking for water.  The only water is in livestock stocktanks are at windmills.  In ranch country there are deer crossing signs where there are windmills.

DS hit a deer the summer before he left for college.  Insurance wanted to total his pickup...

Thanks Sue and Bonnie.
Yup, we are OK today.
Jamie went to the Little League Parade at noon, and them to her game.
They just got home. Tied 6-6.
I just stayed home and vegged, made tomato soup for lunch.
Watched HGTV...still have an achey lower back.

Here are some pix, although the pix tend to flatten the dents, I betcha this is going to be big $$$ on the estimate.
Taking it in around lunch to the body shop.
This is where I removed a 3-4" wide strip of scalped deer skin about 18" long.

The driver side door has one deep dent that doesn't show much on this shot...
I think it was from one of her front knees. Bottom of door.
Near the handle is another dent, I think from her shoulder or head.

Good thing you were driving a sturdy vehicle.  There are always some serious injuries and the odd death from deer/vehicle collisions around here.  It's a shame your jeep was damaged but at least it's repairable, bodies are harder to heal.  Hope your back is feeling better by now.  emm

It is just good that everyone escaped major injuries. Car's can be replaced! I had to stop on the highway this morning to let 2 moose cross in front of me. There are always a lot of deer and moose on the roads here in the spring, and with the flooding this year it has been even worse!

How terrifyingly horrible for you and Jamie, your family and the deer!   Really sad about the poor deer but glad you and Jamie are fine minus the aches.

When I was young, eons ago, on a family vacation, my father was driving us from Montreal back to Saint John, New Brunswick, late at night.  When in the middle of nowhere a medium size moose jumped out on the highway.  Unfortunately we hit it with our Chevy Van on the front right corner and light but it ran back into the forest.  We were very sure the moose was critically injured because of the damage and gore to the Van.  AND you know about 30+ years ago American autos were made of really sturdy stuff.  :'(  It felt like we hit a mountain side.  There were no lights aside from the single light on the van.  We were all scared and very shaken.  Something I will never forget.

About 10 years ago driving to Vail, Colorado from California for a ski trip, we encountered many deers dead on the side of the road in forest areas.  Most likely from car hits.  So sad  :(

Yikes!  What a terrible experience for you both!

My one experience with a deer I got very lucky.  It was in Ohio & close to Christmas time.  The deer managed to jump completely over the car with no damage.

Joyce, I'm glad you and Jamie are OK.  I'm sorry about the damage to your Jeep (but also glad you were driving the Jeep instead of the PT).

I'm sad about the pregnant deer, but glad that Jamie didn't see any more than she did.  The deer are really bad around here right now, too.  I'm not sure why, but every time I read the accident reports in the paper, 10 out of 12 accidents are caused by people hitting deer.  Usually that happens in about November, during the rutting season.  I don't know why they are moving so much now.  :-\
