uuhh ohh a Racoon in the neighborhood
« on: May 21, 2008, 07:32:00 AM »
My neighbor told me there was, I though he must be daft.  After a pool playing session at his home we walked outside and there it was. Pregnant or nursing!  She scaled a school yard fence and was gone.
I worry she will find the pond.

Hope it doesn't find your pond.  I had some coming at night last year.  Thankfully they didn't do any damage or get any fish that I know of.

We trapped two of them last week and relocated them to our son's property.  They were fun to have around all winter and didn't really cause any damage but they had started digging in my flower pots this spring.  They have never bothered the pond.  A few years ago one was sniffing for fish food around the edge.  We walked toward him and he swam across the pond.

My dog caught one trying to steal chicken eggs last night.  >:(-

Unfortunately, it didn't survive the experience.

I would be more worried about your turtles. They love them.

Oh, yes, Jerry, they will dig up and eat the eggs - have found many ruined nests in my yard.  They will also eat the heads off your hatchling turtles.  And even eat the adults, if they can.

Get that live trap!!!

We put about 40 pounds of rock on top of our garbage cans to keep them from making a mess, but I do confess... I feed them.  :P I feed the skunks & possums, too!  :D

IMO, it keeps them happy and OUT of the places I don't want them (pond, garbage).

I mentioned above that we had caught two last week.  Well, we didn't get them all.  When I went out to bring in the cat food bowl that sits on my potting bench this evening, I found this little guy.  He wasn't afraid at all.  I wish we could just feed them like Karen mentioned and they would stay out of the other stuff, but they don't.  He was so cute, but I imagine we will trap him tomorrow and turn him loose where the others two went.
