Repotting taro for pond
« on: June 03, 2008, 07:43:04 AM »
I got a Black Magic Taro at a nursery yesterday.  It's in regular potting soil.  Can I repot it in pea gravel and put it in the pond?  If so, how much soil if any do I leave around the tuber and roots?

Lisa wash off ALL the soil...and then put it in the pea gravel...it will be fine....also my black magic doesn't like the water very deep over the bulb...and really its best to have the pot right at the water level or even a bit above....

Thanks Lawanna!  Should the bulb be covered with gravel?  The bulb is not completely covered with soil right now.  Should it go at the same level in the gravel, with the top just above the gravel?  I would like to grow the taro in the skippy filter, but is there any way to float the pot at the top?

Lisa yes the bulb should be covered-but, just barely...floating----you will have gravel which is heavy---and a taro which is tall....I think it would be turning over anytime you got a gust of wind.....you could try attaching a piece of that swimming noodle that kids play with in the pool around the lid of the pot with zip ties.....
