two cannas in one - what's going on here?
« on: August 17, 2006, 09:35:45 AM »
ok, some of you have seen my canna blooms before the hacking. since then, i have had this unusual bloom - two types of bloom from the same plant. it is on one of the greens with yellow blooms - in fact you can see an all yellow bloom stalk from the same plant in the background of the pic. but this stalk and the next one coming along behind it have blooms from my other variety that grows alongside it mixed in with the yellows. i mean, i understand sports but showing the characteristics of an entirely separate variety on the same plant? how does this happen? and do you think i can get this to reproduce and duplicate with entirely new stalks?

Looks like some sort of mutation occurred.  I would try growing it again next season with both seeds and from the root division.  You may have a canna mutation worth some money if it is genetically stable and reproduces those flowers again.

I think there is one called Cleopatra that is known to do that.
Check out these Google images...

i do believe you've nailed it Joyce! following the link and then the links from pics, i can pretty much be sure that is what it is. it seems that my purple ones might even be the same variety as well from reading a bit. once my batteries have recharged, i'll try and post some pics that explain some more.

thanks Joyce!!  O0

when i first looked at the pics i was a bit doubtful because i didn't remember ever seeing the variagation in the leaves that is supposed to happen. but sure enough, there was a small stripe in one of the leaves. and then i saw the plant emerging next to it - a nice big stripe of chocolate:

and like i said before, i think the purples may be cleopatra as well. descriptions i read said it grows that way as well. some of the purple leaves have shades of green in them and i found one bud that really makes me think it's possible:

there is definitly some yellow in this bud and while not as obvious, there is some speckling like the yellow buds have. the pics that really showed a bright yellow section at the base of this flower didn't turn out. maybe i'll try again tomorrow. apparently the mixing of colors only appears in a relatively small percentage of the plants. but i got these plants all at the same time as a gift from a neighbor who was moving when we first landscaped the yard so they could all be cleopatra. interesting that it is known as schizophrenic canna as well since both my SE and myself are mental health professionals who work with people with schizophrenia all the time. plus, the person who gave it to us has bipolar illness. makes it all the more special.  8)

and mike, from what i could tell of internet prices, this plant is still worth a few pennies more than most cannas.  O0

I used to grow it in NC. (8:-)
Yes, the variegation is 'variable' to say the least. ;)

Maybe next year we can trade for a piece? ?)(?

Thanks Ed! @O@
Remember, if you are in a tropical area,
I have LOTS of tropical plants that need to go 'south'.
Otherwise, we can wait for spring! (8:-)
