No apology needed. :) I was all excited - because cranes would be a wonderful thing to have visiting. Some day I'll bore you with the distinction.

For herons, egrets, kingfishers, Osprey, all those relatively light fish predators - fishing line string at about a 3 foot interval over the pond. Its clear, the fish eaters can't see it. When they hit the line in the air, it spooks them. Birds are very vulnerable in the air - delicate bones, fragile feathers. So they go elsewhere.
A determined bird will eventually work out the boundaires, and then you have to get more aggressive. But for the most part clear fishing line, which is not unattractive or very noticeable, will do the trick.

Doesn't help with snakes or mammals, tho.

A scarecrow sprinkler system works wonders... kind of pricey.
Thanks,

Welcome, Mike, glad to have you here.

Last week I built a set of screens to cover my pond.  Built of PVC pipe frames, and then I attached chicken wire, and spray painted everything black.  Lightweight, easy to move, not too noticeable, and I sure hope it will keep the fish from jumping out, and the 'coons from digging in.

As far as plants go, there are people here who sell lilies and other plants.  Hopefully, someone will see your post and respond soon.

Rick, go to the Lab Tearing Up Pond thread, and Johns has a post about 2/3 down.  His link to his site is there.
