Yes, some lilies can handle the lotus, and others end up getting bulldozed, like my Lilypons and Gloire du Temple sur Lot.
Both got 'eaten' by lotus when we temporarily put them in the lotus pond while relining the big pond out front.
If you look closely, the lotus doesn't always grow right up to the edges, and I use those open places for lilies.
The Arc En Ciel is planted in the mud, 3 feet deep, in the midst of the lotus and it's doing just fine.
