The area is not a place you would want to park your car Mike.  Every pice of crap in the world is dumped in that once beautiful lake. amazing the lotus did so well for so long :'( >:(-

Yes, it's become like a visit to a 3rd world nation....interesting place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.  That's perhaps one reason the city hasn't tried to fix the problem.  Parts of L.A. appear beyond fixing.  I can only imagine the trash & crud on the bottom of that lake.  A Lotus Festival....without any lotus.....  That indeed is pretty sorry....

I read the other day in our paper that a lake in a city park here has so much sludge in it that it is almost filled in. The lake is 16' deep and now only 1'-3' deep. They showed a photo of geese standing out in the middle. This city park is in a fabulous neighborhood surrounded by expensive homes.

Hey Mikey,

Have you ever gone to the Lotus Festival, and if so, what is it?

The article was very depressing, maybe someone can blow up Joyce's picture and hang it over the lake?

Kamala: If they saw the photo of Joyce's lotuses they would say, "What are those?"  lol  I've never attended the Lotus Festival but it appears to be a pretty big event.  It's been ten years or so since I've been to the Echo Park area and after seeing all the indicators of gang activity I have had no desire to return.....  Who knows, it may be been cleaned up by now.....but I doubt it.....  It's probably reasonably safe in the daytime and during the festival I imagine there is a significant increase in police presence.

LeeAnne, if there are Canadian geese in the lake, it is also possible that excess goose poop is what is burning these lotus to death.

We have a horrendous time with Canadian Geese on our Sod Fields at work. The poop is the size of large dog turd and very toxic/acidic.
Burns holes all over the sod. Problem is, not easy to clean up because they are not firm. (they look firm but don't let that fool you!)
Very loose. Blech! And if you try to wash them away, it just burns a bigger hole in the sod.
We have employed all sorts if gadgets on the sod fields, but in the end, what works best is these rattling metallic shiney flags.
They are these size of a black lawn bag flattened out. On a metal stake so the bag just touches the ground when limp.
Makes a racket in the wind, and the movement scares the geese. Have to be placed about every 50-100 feet allover the sod fields.
Expensive too not to mention manpower to put them up and take them down when mowing or harvesting. And in the fall-winter, a lot of them get blown away or shredded beyond any use.
Anyway, Canadian Goose poop is horribly toxic. Way worse that ducks, etc, mostly because of the sheer size, and volume Canadian Geese can produce!

But most of the local golf courses have employed 'Goose Dogs', which are dogs trained to chase geese off the fairways and putting greens.  8)

We have loads of Canadian Geese here and I know all about their poop it IS nasty stuff but the pond in question has never had lotuses. The lotuses that are missing are in LA.

Our Chinese Garden has lotuses that they keep in a greenhouse half the year because our springs are so cloudy and gray they wouldn't bloom otherwise. It was just on our local TV garden show two weeks ago that they just brought them out and put them into the pond.

That's interesting Joyce.  Our city lakes typically have a lot of mud hens but only a few Canadian geese... but I can't speak for Echo Park since it's been so long since I've been there.  As I think about it, I can't say I've ever seen Canadian geese in the water as I usually see them in grassy areas near the water.

So Joyce, just how much do they pay a goose dog?  {:-P;; ;) lol

LeeAnne: During our last trip up there Vinae took us to visit the Chinese garden.  It was cold and a slight drizzle but we enjoyed the visit.  I can't recall the name of the plant but there was something flowering that had a sweet fragrance that we liked.  We had tea in their tea house and that warmed us up.. In the capital city of this province they had a lake problem too.  Four years ago they drained it and dug it back out.  Cost $18 million to the taxpayers and 90% of the use is just from the people in Regina so the rest of the province wasn't exactly thrilled with the bill.  The company I work for did good on it since they sold a bunch of the earthmoving equipment for the project and serviced the rest.  Our Christmas bonus that year was a book on the project which went over real well with the employees.  They have since learned that handing out a $29.00 book instead of any cash at Christmas doesn't exactly increase production nor give people a lot of Christmas cheer.  It was an interesting book though.
