Anyone ever raise fry inside in a fishtank?
« on: July 06, 2008, 01:08:30 PM »
I saw a bunch of fish fry in my pond the other week and thought I would love to see how they grow up in a tank. So I left three in my pond to see if they make it on their own, brought 12 in in a small two gallon fish tank for now and added a bubbler.
I didnt first start the bubbler till a few days after I brought them in them noticed I was down to about six fry for some reason, so I thought maybe they need more oxygen so I put the bubbler on. I think Im down to about 6 now. o(
Could not enough oxygen caused the others to die?
And how long does it take for a fry to morth to say about a half inch long?
Im doing this just for fun to see how they grow, not sure what I will do with them after they grow up if they last that long. Probably have to give them to a friend' s pond.
Id love to know any advice anyone would have.
Ive given them just a little flake food once a day, is that okay?
thanks everyone! :)

First off congrats!  @O@ @O@ @O@ O0 O0 O0

1. The O2 problem may be a possibilitie but I think the fry ate eachother...
Make sure you feed 5-8 times a day.
2. A half inch long should be reached within a Month, but the more room the better.
3. More food! at least 5 times a day.
Try to give them more space to grow. The bigger the better.
Good luck!  ;)
Thanks,
Rich

Youre kidding Rick!
The fry will actually eat each other????!!!! :o
Did not know that! Thought just the bigger fish ate the fry!
Learn something new everday!
Is giving them just some flake food 5 times a day enough?
thanks Rick!

Hey Rick,
I believe these fry all to be goldfish, but how do you really tell if they could be goldfish or koi fry? Can you only tell by the eggs, and how the heck do you tell then? ::)

Yes I have tried to raise the fry in my aquarium as well.  I found that the babies outside grow twice as fast than the ones inside.  Most likely due to the unlimited supply of natural food.  Good luck with your babies.

I'm not really 100% sure if its the size or how well the tank/pool/pond are established that makes them grow the best....I have a 5,000 gallon above ground pool I use to grow my fry in....there is always about 50 babies that get left in the pond with mom and dad-2,000 gallon pond that has been well established for 4 years..they grow 10 times faster than those that I grow out in the 5,000 gallon pool-that gets drained and refilled every year....makes one wonder  :-\....

Well, so THAT's why I am down from 1000 fry to about 30 babies.

Will make a note to start feeding several times a day, instead of once.  And I have already fished out the Tobies.  Huge and UGLY.

And, believe it or not, I have recently spotted a few that look like they are exactly the same size as the day they hatched, back in March.  Seriously, I was wondering if the babies had already mated and spawned, and this was a new crop of babies.
