Siamese twin blooms from Rhonda Kay
«
on:
July 10, 2008, 10:39:18 AM »
Kat sent me a Rhonda Kay earlier this year, and it bloomed for the first time this week- a double bloom! It has two stems joined together all the way from the crown of the plant up to the blossoms, which are joined together at the outer stamens. It has 8 sepals. Very neat.... I know this isn't a first, but it is a first for me anyway, and who doesn't like to see pictures of weird stuff, right?
Sorry the pics are so grainy and blurry and cheesy... My camera is at the Canon repair center, and is being fixed as we speak, and I am supposed to have it back within 7 days. So.... I had to cut the bloom, and bring it to work to take a pic of it with my laptop's webcam. It doesn't focus well up close, and so to get some that were focused I ended up having to be in the pic with the blooms...
So you get some pics of 3 weirdos instead of just 2

That is mega-cool, Joey! And thanks for explaining how they're connected as twins. I had no idea lilies would do that.
It's really big, too. But... HOW could you go and CUT it?!?!?

Well, one good thing about cutting it is that it smells great, and so I get to sniff it every so often at work this afternoon

Very unusual.
I got a Rhonda Kay from Kat this year too - and its a very prolific bloomer. But no doubles.
I was in a hurry and just tossed it in the pond, to keep it safe until I could plant it. When I came back to plant, it had rooted and so I left it alone.
Its been VERY busy... flowering a lot.

Beautiful color on that huge bloom, WoW is just the word for it. Once cut, will it close and reopen. Just wondering, I have thought of cutting one to bring in smell but just didn't try it yet. Now I have a new want list started LOL.

Once cut, a bloom will continue it's open and close cycle for three days as long as it still gets normal light from the sun.
Many times since it has no plant attached to draw energy from it will not close on it's last day, especially in a cool environment.
This artificially keeps them open up to 5 days at times.
See the attached that lasted up to 5 days in many cases. This was taken of the 3rd day flowers.
