Yikes, thats unbelievable.
We just got back a week or so ago from a fishing trip to Canada.  Our son, daughter-in-law and some of their friends went with us.  The girls were fishing in the back of the boat and Autumn caught a fish.  I grabbed the dip net and leaned over the boat to net it.  It really wasn't a great situation, as I couldn't see what I was doing very well.  Right as she lifted up the fish and I lifted the net, the fish got off the hook and the lure came straight up into her face.  It scared the crap out of me.  She was holding her hand over her mouth and wouldn't let us look for a while, all we could see was blood.  Thank goodness it had just split her lip, nothing major.  We were a long way from a doctor and I was really expecting to see her teeth knocked out or broken.  I didn't net anymore fish after that.

When one is pumping a fish, and gaining line one would NEVER cut the line.
These are the babies I used to manufacture.  The 3oz. model was much more poulat.  This one was strictly for deep water.

Of course you wouldn't cut the line with a fish on it.  o(
This guy was snagged on the bottom, and yanking hard to get it unsnagged.
He was a little too successful on getting it unsnagged. :o

Oh, I didn't see what it was caught on. I also figured he originally had a fish and it came loose.

That was freaky...

Reminds me of something stupid I once did while catching Bonito and my stupidity resulted in a treble hook from my lure being buried deep into a finger.  However, the fishing that day was great so I snipped off the other two barbs and continued fishing.......  I was 22 or 23 then.  If that would happen today I would quit fishing and likely whine all the way to the doctor's office..... ;D

The bottom is usually 60 feet down or more in local fishing. If so "recoil" is not a problem, but even then cutting the line is common. One can cut their fingers on mono in attempting to free a lure.
