Visitor to my Pond
« on: July 31, 2008, 05:24:32 PM »
I snapped these yesterday.  I was just hanging out around the pond and I saw this guy *gal?* fluttering around and flitting from side to side, landing on my floating hearts.  Was she laying eggs?

I've had my pond 3 years now and I have never seen a dragonfly yet.  I sure wish they would come around.  I was also polluted with the cicadas this summer.  We literally pushed them off our deck with a shovel for awhile after the mating session.  I broomed them up to 8 times in a day.  I can only imagine how many will be here in 17 years.  I have no lilies this year.  My fish ate every little bud off once the shoots got up a few inches.  They cleaned off 3 plants.  I'll buy new ones next season.  I don't know why the fish are so hungry this year but they are.  I am not expecting to see any babies.  The are constantly working over all the plants so I don't see how anything could survive with these swimming vacuum cleaners.  One lonely frog here.  2 earlier but they left.  I'm keeping my eye out for dragon flies.

That's a new one for me...cool green coloring.  Looks like a dragonfly and you even found the eggs!  ;D

Jax do you have koi?  I have a small koi pond and the koi never left my lilies alone...wait, maybe that was my DH!  :P  Maybe your fish need to be fed more  ;D

You are so lucky to catch her in action, I didn't know they lay eggs on leaves just like butterflies.

I've never seen the eggs before, either.  Cool!

The dragonflies that come to my pond, they dip their rear end in the water while in flight, so the eggs fall down into the water.  I think some also lay eggs on a plant, above the water.

Caught a nice blue damsel fly doing the same thing the other day in my pond, but of course didn't have the camera with me. >:(-

I got very lucky... I took the chance and went running for my camera.  Apparently she had a lot to do.  ;D  This is the first green one I've seen, and the largest by far.  Usually I see pretty little blue guys.  I felt so lucky to get these shots.   o(:-)  Hopefully more soon  ;)

Great pics. They are too fast for me. We're having a great year for dragonflies, seems like hundreds more than last year.

Thanks!  Today I managed to really wrench my back doing some work for my mom  :'( While I was trying to relax by my pond, I suddenly see a dragonfly.  I thought... Camera!  So off I go, lumbering off toward the house with my igor posture  ::)  Anyhow, this is who I caught...  o(:-)
