It bloomed!!!
« on: July 27, 2008, 08:14:01 PM »
I have a Victoria Longwood that has just bloomed this week-end. It is the first Longwood that I have had since 2003. I was excited when I saw the bud, but didn't expect the bloom to open until last night. It opened friday night. there is also another bud on it so I should have another bloom in a couple of days!
Hopefully these 5 pictures will show in order, as you see the bud on Friday, the pure white bloom early Saturday morning, the bloom turning colors around 3 -4 pm, and then the bloom at 9 pm Sat. night was completely Flamingo pink.  It was closed this morning, and had sunk into the water by tonight.

Way Cool! You had to wait 6 years for a bloom?! I am not that patient!

Hi Perplexed Ponder. Longwoods have to be planted every year. I cannot over winter them in my zone, so each year I would have to get a new one. I could not get one for the last 5 years. This is a new plant, planted in May. That is why I was surprized to find a bud and a bloom so early.

Your Vic is beautiful!  Thanks for showing the progress photos.  Couldn't you bring the plant in when it gets cold?  What zone are you in?  If you were in a warmer area, like my pond is (hint-hint  :D ), would you be able to keep Vic growing/dormant to bloom again when the weather warms up?

Hi Annette. I tried  bringing the one in in 2003. I put it in my greenhouse, but it wasn't warm enough to keep it year round. These lilies have pads that get huge so it is not possible to bring them into the house and put into something like an aquarium.  I have a 8 foot round pond in the greenhouse that I hoped was warm enough to keep the plant alive for a while longer, and it did, but still died in October. The pads right now are about 18 inches across, but the one in 2003 got up to 30 inches by the end of the summer.  Might have grown bigger if there had been more time.

Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what is that thing?
