Eeeeeewwwwwwwwwww
« on: August 09, 2008, 10:19:13 AM »
I recently used my chipper/shredder yard machine and threw all the plant material onto my compost pile....along with some old citrus fruit.  A few days ago I removed a tarp covering the top and there were all these soldier fly larvae having a feast......  How does that phrase go; "One man's trash is another man's treasure......"  They make pretty good snacks for the fish too....  Hmmmm, I wonder what they would taste like if deep-fried....?

Neat article Sunbeam.

I keep having images of chocolat covered "crispers" after reading the "deep-fried" part....
My next female cat will be called "Whata Lily"!

I keep an epdm tarp over the compost pile and whenever the top surface gets too wet or when I add moldy bread, rotting veggies/fruit etc., these soldier larvae show up.  They must really like the heat because that compost pile is steaming-hot and then it has that black tarp over it to add more heat....  The soldier fly is not very fast at flying and for the past couple of weeks I have seen a Black Phoebe fly catcher perched right next to the compost pile picking off an occasional soldier fly.  It's all part of the food chain....  http://forum.doityourself.com/showthread.php?p=1396593

Those maggots are fast moving little boogers.  When I pick up some to feed to the fish it's all I can do to keep them from crawling out of my closed hand/fist via the cracks between my fingers and palm....  Now THAT'S a weird feeling....
