Best Source for Pond Liner?
« on: August 24, 2008, 05:07:45 AM »
What is the best source for pond liner in terms of price and shipping.  I have noticed that they sell them online and in home depot and lowes.  So far I have seen 20 mil and 45 mil, is one better than the other?  Where did everyone else buy theirs?  I am planning for next year.

Also, is there a best time of the year to buy them for less?

Be careful what you buy at Home Depot or Lowes. That 20 mil is PVC and the 45 mil is EPDM. The PVC is only rated for five years or so. The EPDM will last for twenty years or more. I have a PVC liner that I'm going to try to reuse on another trough. The trough that it was used in didn't last as long as the liner. What is left is piled up at the side of my workshop.

I purchased my 45 mil EPDM at a local roofers warehouse. They cut it to size and loaded it into my truck. Since they have such volume the cost is much cheaper than going to a pond store. They also have larger sizes than home depot or lowes.  My liner is 35x22 and I purchased it for $381 plus tax. right at 50 cents a square foot.

And of course the 20 mil will be easier to handle and the 45 stiffer. BUTTTTT in the long run the thicker will last. Try Gene at Koi Village too http://www.koivillage.com/  .  Personally, I'd head for the local roofer. Mention it is for a pond.

I use the roofing liner as well. It is the same stuff, 45 mil EPDM. Be careful, though... if you mention to a pond "expert" that you're using roofing liner they may try and steer you to the more expensive "fish safe" liner- 45 mil EPDM... exactly the same liner only with a "fish safe" stamp on it. Don't pay more than you need to for that expensive little stamp.
If you can find it locally you'll save a ton of money on shipping.
Around here there is a store called Menard's that regularly has a sale on it.

Firestone cleans their fishsafe liner before the stamp. They remove any oils and loose material from manufacturing.

Hmmm....I didn't think of roofing liner, that's a good idea.  I had my roof tiles replaced recently (damage from Hurricane Jeanne back in 2004) so I have a roofer in mind already.  Maybe he will sell me some for a good price.  I'll ask him, and I'll be sure to wash it well if I do manage to get some from him.  {:-P;; Thanks for the suggestions!   ;D

I also use roofing liner for all my ponds.  Much cheaper!  Never had any problems w/it!
