Badlands, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons Pix
« on: September 01, 2008, 11:31:22 PM »
We decided to visit a number of National Parks in August and spent eleven days going to The Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Little Big Horn, Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons...the following are a few pix from our trip.

I always wondered why they called them "The Badlands" and when we saw them the reason was immediately apparent...dry, barren and foreboding rock formations, carved by ancient rivers, seemingly rise out of nowhere in the otherwise bucolic plains of South Dakota

It was at first somewhat disconcerting walking around the hot springs, geysers, and mud pots of Yellowstone realizing that you're walking atop the largest, active "super volcano" in North America which could "blow" at any minute in the next 30,000 years or so...but sometimes it's worth playing the odds to experience natural beauty

The vibrant colors of the Prismatic Hot Spring are caused by bacteria which have adapted to extremely high temperatures

Old Faithful was faithful, erupting approximately every ninety minutes

Lower Falls, aka Artist's Point, lived up to it's description

Bears Tooth Pass in Montana, on the way to Yellowstone, was impressive

Of course, the Bison herds and other wild animals also make Yellowstone a special place...here's a cool shot of Bison crossing a river...

and then crossing a road

Could have filmed a Hartford Insurance commercial

In Grand Tetons, one of the highlights was a scenic raft ride down the Snake River which provided this view

Mountain reflecting on a lake

We are all fortunate that our country has such natural wonders.

Oh, wow, I have never been any of those places and now you have me wanting to go so bad.

My Mom spent the day here yesterday and she mentioned that she wants to go to the Grand Canyon.  We are thinking of going on a chartered bus tour next summer, but its 12 days and that's a long trip for her, she'll be 89 next summer.  Guess you could say it's on our bucket list!

Wonderful pictures, you really need to blow up some of those and frame them.

Glad you went out and saw part of America.

I've been to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks and they are amazing.

Grand Canyon is also not to be missed.

Thank you for the amazing photos!  I feel like I've been there too with the wonderful photography and descriptions!  I am absolutely amazed with rock formations and their layering and weathering.  Beautiful!

We went through the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Chief Crazy Horse, and Yellowstone about 6 years ago. You have some great pictures. I especially liked the "reflecting mountain".

LeeAnne, I agree that no one should miss experiencing the Grand Canyon...pictures and video cannot do it justice...it literally takes your breath away when you first see it.

Thanks for playing the odds, and risking life and limb for these photos. Really enjoyed them.

Cheers,

Mike

Great photos. I know you had a great time. My wife and I made the same journey about 8 years ago. We stayed some time in Jackson hole where you probably took your rafting trip.

As far as the super volcano, if it goes we all go. You would simply go the quickest.

Beautiful pictures!  We went to all of those places in our US travels in the RV after I retired.  I love the west and the incredible vistas.  South Dakota and Custer State Park were a favorite.  We also spent a few weeks in North Dakota and really enjoyed the Teddy Roosevelt national park there.  Wild horses and buffalo walking through the campground!  It's a beautiful country, I'm so proud that we have preserved some of the natural beauty for future generations.
