and some additional 50s theme party pictures
« on: August 31, 2008, 06:36:29 PM »
The food table and dessert tables are up on the deck in the shade. This table is for desserts. We have root beer floats, chocolate ice cream sundaes, key lime tarts and watermelon. Those are penny pretzels you see. It was popular to buy a penny pretzel to eat with your cherry coke.  The candy bowl is made from an old record softened in the oven while laying over a metal upside down bowl and shaped with my fingers.  The candy was Bit O Honey, Milk Duds, Good and Plenty, chocolate stars, Maple nut goodies, and Fireballs all popular during my child(teen)hood.

The next one is our pool shed. The sign is from my DH's storage building. I cut out school letters from felt to represent some of the schools our guests attended. Then on the right side of the door, I enlarged clipart of soda shop food, and printed them on cardstock. Then I covered them with clear shelf paper.

Esther why don't you get to the part everyone is waiting to see.....  We want to see you in the poodle skirt.  Post all your pics and keep us waiting if you must.

So far your party looks like its going to be a great time.. you however in the poodle skirt will be the show stopper.

THis is an overview of our back yard looking down from the neighbor's driveway that is about 4' above our yard. You can just barely see DH's 76 Vette behind the neighbor's car. He let us borrow his 1953 Ford for a decoration for the party. There is a Route 66 sign, a Corvette parking only sign, and a metal Corvette sign, all hanging on the fence along the garden. Then there are hoola hoops leaning against the fance at the end of the pool. Those table clothes hanging on the pool fence were on the tables originally but after I hung them up to dry, I decided they'd be part of the decorations.

No poodle skirt. LOL. This gal would look big as a house in a full skirt. I'm big enough as it is. But I will try to remember to have someone take a picture. I'm going to have to get out the wide angle lense. I just wore jeans with the cuffs rolled up, sox with the tops folded over a couple of times, pink shoestrings in my white tennis shoes, DH's class ring on a chain, big pearl clip on earrings, pearl fingernail polish,  pearl bracelet and necklace, and a button up pink blouse with the front shirt tails tied together in a knot at the waist. That was Saturday night. Tomorrow, I might wear white capris depending on the temps out.

Remember Burma Shave signs? I printed out 4 and DH mounted them on some plywood.

Here's the patio with the tables decorated. I found some 50s stickers and stuck them around the checkered cloth in the center. The party Saturday had about 15 people. The one Monday will be about 30. I just have to set up another table and put another person at the three already set up. The centerpiece is just a fountain shaped thingy with musical notes on it. I stuck them in those coca cola cups.

I took the pictures before anybody got here. I often get so busy I forget to take pictures when people are here. I'll try again today. This party is for mostly family and may be about 30. Saturday's only 15 showed up out of 22.

I have more pictures but can't get Photobucket to download them. They have to be resized to bring them here and my resize software only asks for pixels, measurements or percentages, not KBs and I don't know how to do it other than guessing.

Howell, this party was centered around what us old folks remember of the 1950s. Coca Cola was the big thing. I don't know if we even had Dr. Pepper then. Besides the coke cups were free and I thought they would fit into the theme I was using. I'm still working on pictures. My computer got a virus I guess and now IE doesn't let me use it. So my son put Mozilla Firefox on so I can at least get online. But since then I can't use Photobucket which automatically resizes my pictures to post here. So in the meantime I'm trying to use a resizing software and didn't know how to make it work until Katfish told me. So now I'll go back to the rest of the pix.

This is my DH and I. The 50s fashions that I display are: pearl clip on earrings, pearl necklace and bracelet, turned up collar, Pete's classring on a chain around my neck showing the world we are "going steady", shirttails knotted in the front, capri pants, (Saturday I wore jeans cuffed) rolled down sox, and white tennis shoes and pink shoelaces. Pete had his jeans cuffed, white tshirt with sleeves cuffed and I trimmed his sideburns real long and tried to give  him a flat top but his hair was too short. He forgot to wear his sunglasses. The guys wore black sunglasses with black frames.

Pete's son Ken made us a nice sign. It is now sitting in the den propped against the gun cabinet. By the way the den is decorated with all Pete's Corvette memorabilia.

The last one is just people trying to get in the shade.

The food table. The food line. The beverage table with thermoses of punch, water and iced tea. Note the rack of 45 records. Those were Pete's when he had a record player in his car----mid 60s. We were playing 50s-60s music all the time too.

And finally the stars of the show. Rick's 1956 Chevy (with nitrous in the back seat), Cindi's 1968 Camaro, Don's 86 Vette, Steve's 96 Camaro, Dave's 62 Ford Galaxie, and Pete's 76 Vette.

The greasers.

And then they went home.

I could have fit right in with my 1969 burgundy Firebird 400!  My mother bought it new, gave it to me 10 years later and I had it for about 20 years and then gave it to my son.  He has it now in storage in LA.  Still with the original engine and leather upholstery.  I didn't give it to him for many years, first when he was in his 20's because I was afraid he would get in a wreck. It will hit 100 mph pretty quick (don't ask me how I know that  ::) )  Then when he was older I was afraid he would get carjacked in LA for it.  Now, he's in his 40's and he only drives it on Sundays and to events so I'm not worried as much.

I love Pete's Chevy.  Talk about memories!  That is one very cool ride.
