Plenko
« on: April 06, 2010, 04:38:41 AM »
Saw these yesterday at the fish shop. They are about 15" long. Apparently they can grow pretty big and people buy them for aquariums and then bring them back because they are too big. They had them in a pond with koi and turtles and everything seemed fine. Not much information on google or any searches I have done. With their main diet being algae I was thinking of adding one.

Anyone have any experience

Was it Plenko or Pleco? I've never heard of plenko but what you describes sounds like plecos. They are a tropical fish. Ponders in south Florida and the lower part of central Florida can put them in their ponds with no worries.
Happy ponding,

Yeah that might be it. Maybe that is why I am having no luck with my searches! They did say I would have to bring them in for the winter which is fine as I am planning on putting a swimming pool in my garage for the winter and putting lotus and other tropical lilies that I cannot leave outside in their

Their spines can be very sharp, so keep that in mind.  You may want to inquire into getting bristlenose plecostumus instead as they don't get larger than 6" if you want something smaller.  Plus they have certain temp requirements.  I've kept my bristlenose in my house in their aquarium without a heater but the temps stay right around 69 degrees at the lowest.

Kat

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

I don't think Plecos like water temps below 70*. A pool in your garage might not be adequate. Keep in mind I have never had a pleco, so do some research on temperature requirements.

My garage is kept warmer than my house (about 72f) all winter as I am out their more than in the house. Two story, upstairs I start several hundred annuals for my yard. We have a pool table upstairs as well as living area and a well stocked bar. I joked that instead of traveling south for holidays we could put the pool up their beside the bar and pretend its a swim up bar down south at some fancy resort. As usual my idea was voted down!

Well if you don't mind sitting with a pleco, some other various fish and a few plants I imagine early fall to late spring the pool bar will be open :teehee:
