Huewl Howser did a thing once called 'Fresno Underground" Sort of like Watts Towers. An Italian immigrant spent his life digging and making dwellings under ground!

I can understand that Jerry.  After all, who would want to live above ground in Fresno?  (Mikey ducking again from all the beer bottles being tossed by Fresnonians)  ;)

I lived in Fresno a couple decades ago when I was transferred there by my company.  I lived there all of about a couple/few weeks and hated it.  On New Years Day at about 1:00 am I was driving home from a friend's and there was a big commotion and police presence across from the Blackstone Mall.  Of course, I stopped to see what was going on, thinking that a car when into the drainage ditch or something like that.  Then I found out that a teenager had been stabbed and killed, and his body was laying on the side of the road.  It was then that I learned why they call a body a "stiff", as rigamortis had already set in.  Blackstone is (was?) a major street, so for someone to be lying there in the street, dead, and there were no witnesses it was pretty strange, let alone a teenager.

After a couple weeks I went to San Diego to visit and decided to stay.  So after my two week visit I left for Fresno at  6:00 am and when I arrived at my home I packed up everything in my car (I was young, travelled light!) and told my landlord I was leaving, and quit my job, telling my boss I was done.  I got back to San Diego that night and that was the last I saw of Fresno other than a sign or two while passing by!

The funniest thing that I can remember, though, was that the radio station I listened to kept dedicating everything to some guy named Larry.  I couldn't figure it out...every once in a while they'd say the name of a song that played, then their station, and then they'd say "To Larry".  It wasn't until I was leaving that I realized that the radio station was in a town named Tulare (Tu-Laree) and there really wasn't some all-important guy named Larry who got all the credit!   lol

lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol

When I was 8 years old I attended a camp up at Big Bear Lake.  In the evening we would all sit around a campfire roasting marshmallows and singing a song called "Boosters".  It went like this:  "Boosters will shine tonight, boosters will shine.  Boosters will shine tonight, won't that be fine.  Boosters will shine tonight, boosters will shine.  When the sun goes down and the moon comes up, boosters will shine."

Now fast-forward about 30 years where I'm sitting with my 8-9 year old daughter singing "Boosters".  She looks at me and says, Dad, that song would make more sense if it said "Blue Stars will shine tonight."

She's a lot sharper than her old man.......

I thought they were saying "Hooters!"

We are back, it was 102, but pretty dry. 91 wh3n we got home, seemed cool.  I
did see some very nice landscaped home.
Manicured fits.  Hybrid Bermuda grass the looked like putting greens.  Really flat as a carpet too.
Nice plantings of many palms, Magnolia and both Birds of paradise.  It was in A very upscale neighborhood.
The sky in the San Joaquin Valley is NOT clear! Farm pesticides?

Not bad really, a few hot months yes.  It was the "Murder Capital" of the U.S. but I think that changed.
I have dealt with folks who live there and they were solid folks.

I can't believe I am about to do admit this...  Fresno was good to us.  My dh and I moved there from orange county in 1990.  We were able to rent a house, work part time and attend college, all because of the economy (or lack of one) there.  We managed to be one of 10 couples chosen by a radio station for their "valentines day mass wedding ceremony".  Our eldest daughter was born in clovis, because kaiser didn't have a hospital in fresno (whew).  The crime rates grew and schools were not looking so hot, so we left for washington state (only stayed there 2 years).  I LOVE ORANGE COUNTY!!  That said,  I often think about how much further my dollar goes up there.  I have a brother in clovis (redneck territory, next to fresno).  His house with a pool cost less than 1/2 of mine.  That hurts...  But, I really love orange county, and my kids thank me everytime we visit my brother..."I would die if I had to live there" its mantra by both my teen girls.  I sometimes do miss the smaller community, but not the fly over helicopters with the sun spot lights.

We should have moved to the OC ages ago.  My son went to UC Irvine and now lives in Laguna Beach.  The kid knew what he was doing. An ocean view too.
Here is his "humble" abode.
He is an enthusiastic Gardner too.  See unique planting of golden barrel cactus

No Mike, but he had a boulder stolen.  His landscaper spotted it, but when he went to recover it, it was gone! BIG too.

I love the OC, too.  I even remember when there were orange trees lining the freeways for as far as the eye could see.
Jerry, your son was smart to attend UCI.  O0  Hopefully my 2 kiddies find their potential after we banked for 8 years (2 overlapping) at UCI.  :D
