Succulents & misc garden tour today
« on: October 25, 2008, 01:21:28 PM »
The hens n chicks have almost covered.  The pot below is my "breeding pot"   Why the grow so fast in that pot I am not sure, but they do.
Bromeliads do well in shade. I am not sure if they are carnivorous but the leaves form "cups" and bugs get in there never to return!  Topping my Dracena draco is effective. At long last it will branch out nicely, but  s l o w l y.
Last a lovely succulent just planted. I have no idea what it is.  very handsome though!

the unidentified succulent and turtles from long range. Only one will stay put if I get closer.. There are three.
The tree is a Royal Poinciana, grown from seed from Sean.  I had a big one in the ground, but frost did it in. This time I will take it in for part of the Winter

Jerry,
I was wodering if you were OK.
Yeah, I know that they do out there. I once watched a landscaping show where they were cutting one down out in the front yard with a chain saw. :o

For an indoor plant here, it's good sized.

45 years ago when we had no money I propagated Jade plant. The place was almoat all jade. It was not a wise move, but what did i know?   I have since gotten rid of a lot.

I am much better today, had to beg out of an audition.  Hopefully they will re schedule for me.
I can send cuttings easily.  There is no trick in rooting it, in fact pieces that lay on the ground root too.
Sent some to a relative in Phoenix, but the Arizona summers are too much for Jade, and they are tough!

Hi Jerry,
The unidentified succulent is an Echeveria sp. similar to your hen and chicks.  Also, it's surprising that you're growing Delonix regia the Royal Poinciana tree.  They're hard to grow and very tender to cold.  The trick is to put them in well draining soil, full sun, and do not water them in winter.  Then maybe, maybe will they live.  They will flower here in CA eventually but it's a rare sight to behold.  They are fast from seed though so keep trying.  Here's one growing near Downtown San Diego in a favored microclimate.  It gets no supplimental water.  A sorta lackluster flowering but hey it's alive.

I had a pretty good one outdoors.  The garden guy from the Daily News said he had never seen one in the San Frenando Valley. There was a reason.  Mine did not survive the winter. :'( :'(
I plan on bringing the potted ones inside.
