Priority Mail
« on: June 05, 2009, 05:14:01 PM »
I haven't sent packages in a while and thought the smallest PM was $3. I just googled it and see $4.95. The smallest box was only 1 5/8" deep by 8" by 5" I think was the box size. Are there any other box sizes that go for the $4.95? Is there a limit to how much that small box can weigh and still go for the $4.95? I looked all over the postal website and either didn't understand their information or they didn't answer my questions. LOL.

I believe that's the flat rate box and as much as you can fit in that box is $4.95

Esther it doesn't depend on the box size but, the weight...one pound or under is $4.95....as long as the box is under 12x12x12 it is still $4.95 for the first pound and then it goes up by weight...

This postage stuff is more complicated than I realized. LOL. Just got back and the guy gave me a bunch of FLAT RATE Priority mail boxes that are 11" X 9" X 6" and he said they can weigh anything and go to any zone in the continental US for $10.35. I already had a box a little smaller than that which was labeled Priority. It weighed 3 pounds 9 ounces and he said it would cost $14 something so I brought it back home and repackaged it. The Flat rate boxes seem to be more economical. They were out of the $4.95 size and when the guy suggested I order some online, a customer turned and said, "They are on back order."

Just came back from the post office and decided the flat rate box might not be the way to go. So if I use my own boxes and don't want special shipping (and I don't think these plants need it), it sounds like it would be cheaper. Yup, got on the USPS website and now understand my options. Parcel Post takes 5 days and the price varies depending on destination and weight. So I plugged in 3 pounds and a MS zip and the price was $7. These plants don't require priority shipping. They'll lay on the ground for a month with no water and stick them in the ground and they'll take off.

But my problem was that I had a Priority box that wasn't listed on any of their charts so had no idea what it was considered. Must be I'd had it around a long time.

Our Post Office has available only a few sized of the Proirity boxes.  I have to order the sizes I want to keep at the house for shipping.  Their providing free boxes sure is nice.  I kind of have to laugh at them having to print on the inside of the box because so many people were turning them inside out & using them for cheaper shipping.

OH Kat, I never thought of that. Guess I'll check mine. I don't always have small boxes laying around.

I agree with Kat.  I learned from someone on this site to take an ordinary box and wrap it with white paper.  Last time, I used a graham cracker box and wrapped it with copy paper.  The post office won't charge you the priority mail fee.  Instead, they'll just charge you for the weight.  Make sure to pack it well with newspaper to ensure the safety of the plants.

Sometimes parcel post doesn't take long, but earlier this year it took 10 days for the box to show up.  Plus if the box is in the 2-3 lb area, the price is so close to being Priority you might as well use their free boxes/pay the bit extra.

The new small $4.95 flat rate boxes are about the size of a VHS tape. They don't hold much. I had to order mine online. I went to three post offices and none had them.

The Flat Rate Boxes are not always a deal.  {nono}
It only pays off to use Flat Rate boxes if you're mailing books or other very dense/heavy items.
If water plants are packed correctly, they should NOT weigh much.

Get a scale...then you can figure it out yourself.  :)
I found mine at a yardsale for a couple bucks. 8)

Priority boxes always are the best deal for me when shipping plants. 8)
Tracking and delivery confirmation is worth it.  O0

I haven't been using the Priority that much lately. I've been just using regular first class. I sent a couple items out together a couple of weeks ago. One pkg. was priority mail and it was going to TX. It took 4 days. I sent another small package first class and it went to AL and it only took 2 days. ::)

I about had a stroke when I sent the one to TX. It wasn't even heavy but it was over $13.00 to send it. ::)

I was sending Hens and Chix and they are heavy compared to leafy/stalky stuff. But I'm done with shipping now so will think twice before offering them again. But most have already put their postage in my Paypal anyway so I don't know why I'm fussing about the shipping. I have a couple of scales that were in my mom's stuff when she passed. But what it comes to on the USPS site and what it comes to at the post office didn't match up. I guess I just am not interpreting the chart on USPS correctly.

I've had that too. I have a scale. I've weighed packages and it never fails, I get to the post office and it always comes out more. Sometimes quite a bit more. I've questioned them on it but they just tell me my scales have to be off. ::)

Esther,
I really appreciate your time and effort to send the hens and chix. If my postage is more please let me know. I'll be glad to send more. I love having plants from my friends on here.  o(:-)  When I was in the hospital I lost the donkey tail and other succulents that Jerry sent several years ago. That sucked.

No Kay, it was perfect. I just don't understand how I can weigh something on my scale that is labeled 1 pound and my scale shows 1 pound too. Then when I weigh something for shipping, my scale is wrong.

I have weighed packages myself and then bought the postage label online and printed it out. That seems to work as I've never had one come back to me for insufficient postage.
