Barbaro's Legacy
« on: February 16, 2007, 03:41:15 PM »
Roy and Gretchen Jackson have given $3 million to endow a chair for equine disease research at the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary school, the university announced Tuesday.

The Jackson-owned 2006 Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro, spent a little more than eight months at the university's New Bolton Center equine hospital after shattering his right hind leg during the Preakness Stakes on May 20, 2006. Barbaro, who subsequently developed laminitis, was euthanized at the hospital on Jan. 29.

The endowed chair will be named in honor of the New Bolton Center's chief surgeon, Dr. Dean W. Richardson, who treated Barbaro.

The endowment will be a key element in the university's initiative to fight the disease laminitis, a painful hoof disease that is a common and frequently fatal complication in horses suffering from other initial problems such as injury. Laminitis ultimately was responsible for Barbaro's death after his fractures had healed.

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced today that it will lead a national fundraising program, NTRA Charities – Barbaro Memorial Fund, to raise awareness and money for equine health and safety research in the name of 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands winner Barbaro, whose gallant struggle to overcome a catastrophic injury captivated horse enthusiasts around the world.

One specific target for the direction of monies raised by the Barbaro Memorial Fund will be research projects that focus on laminitis, the painful and often fatal hoof disease that plagued Barbaro for so much of his recuperative period following his injury in the 2006 Preakness Stakes.

The NTRA will organize fundraising initiatives at major racing events and venues in the spring and summer, including the lead-up to the Triple Crown series, the Triple Crown events and other major races during the summer. The NTRA will use merchandise sales, television time, its Internet site and other communications in support of the effort, including producing Public Service Announcements to support the program.

"The outpouring of emotion and support from racing fans has been so amazing that we wanted to find a fitting way for those fans and our industry to honor Barbaro," said Alex Waldrop, CEO of the NTRA. "We consulted with the Jacksons and other industry organizations to see how we could bring our combined resources to bear in this endeavor. We anticipate a busy few months as we work together to assist projects that can have a great impact on the health and safety of Thoroughbreds and, through our focus on laminitis, horses of other breeds as well."

"Gretchen and I hope Barbaro's memory can be carried on through advances in medical research, including a cure for laminitis," said Roy Jackson, co-owner of Barbaro with his wife, Gretchen.

NTRA Charities, -- the NTRA's nonprofit 501 (c) (3) subsidiary, -- will oversee the Barbaro Memorial Fund and 100 percent of the funds raised will flow to existing equine health charities like the Laminitis Fund established at the University of Pennsylvania, the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, and other industry charities focusing on laminitis research.

New York-based Bessemer Trust, an NTRA/Breeders' Cup sponsor, has agreed to establish and maintain an account for NTRA Charities-- Barbaro Memorial Fund at no cost. Contributions can be made immediately via mail to:

NTRA Charities -- Barbaro Memorial Fund
c/o Bessemer Trust Company N.A., attention Robert Elliott
630 Fifth Avenue
New York, N.Y., 10111

Wire-transferred funds can be sent to: Bessemer TR NYC, ABA #026008756; FFC A/C #8H2890: Client name: Bessemer Trust NYC -- for account NTRA Charities, Inc.-- Barbaro Memorial Fund.

All contributions are tax deductible. Questions regarding the fund can be directed to the NTRA's Lexington office, (800) 792-NTRA (6872).

The NTRA is a broad-based coalition of horse racing interests consisting of leading thoroughbred racetracks, owners, breeders, trainers and affiliated horse racing associations, charged with increasing the popularity of horse racing and improving economic conditions for industry participants. The NTRA has offices in Lexington, Ky., and New York City. NTRA press releases appear on the NTRA web site, NTRA.com.

Lets hope they can learn to prevent and cure Laminitis with all this money. It is what Secretariat was euthanized for too.

I've shed more tears over this horse than any other and I'm trying to be positive  :-\  I really do think the money and attention brought to laminitis and to treating fractures in horses is all positive.

No news yet on the final resting place of his ashes. I will post it.

I've ordered the book and the Blood Horse magazine special edition. I grabbed a Breyer for Christmas as my DH couldn't find one. I only paid $45 and they are way way over that on eBay now...

There are some pics on Webshots taken by the public section, that are big enough that they work as a screensaver if you use Webshots. Most are too small and look pixelated but I found a few.

More money for laminitis research!

Blood-Horse Publications has announced that The Blood-Horse Charitable Foundation will donate a minimum of $10,000 to the NTRA Charities Barbaro Memorial Fund. The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) established the NTRA Charities Barbaro Memorial Fund earlier this month to raise awareness and money for equine health and safety research in the name of 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Barbaro, whose gallant struggle to overcome a catastrophic injury captivated horse enthusiasts around the world.

NTRA Charities—the NTRA's nonprofit 501 (c) (3) subsidiary—oversees the Barbaro Memorial Fund and 100 percent of the funds raised flow to existing equine health charities like the Laminitis Fund established at the University of Pennsylvania, the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, and other industry charities focusing on laminitis research.

The minimum $10,000 donation will stem from a portion of the proceeds from the sales of a soon-to-be-released hardcover coffee table book entitled Barbaro: The Horse Who Captured America's Heart, published by Eclipse Press, the award-winning book publishing division of Blood-Horse Publications, chronicling Barbaro's life and legacy.

In addition, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of a special limited-edition magazine also commemorating Barbaro, entitled “Barbaro Commemorative Collector’s Edition,” will be donated to Barbaro Memorial Fund. The Barbaro book and special collectible magazine are both available for pre-order through ExclusivelyEquine.com. Customers without Internet access may order copies by calling 1-800-582-5604.

The Blood-Horse Charitable Foundation was established in 1988 to provide financial support to equine-related charitable organizations.

Tho I am not actively involved any more in the showing of horses I'm still an owner who still loves to trail ride. I am so pleased to see that so much help is coming in to help with this terrible crippling disorder.
I'm just happier outside!
