Death Trap!
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:55:57 AM »
A little dramatic but I looked for the first time into the top of a Sarracenia plant in a bog planter next to my pond.  This is what I saw..... :o

I'm sure there are better photogs out there who have captured better shots of a death trap.

Thanks!  I got hooked on these pitcher plants from AP members.  I recently bought another at a plant show with a budding flower.  I'm so thrilled I get a chance to have it flower in my pond.

Yeah they catch a lot of gnats!  O0

That flower is beautiful RWinn!  Is the pitcher in front the parent plant?  I don't know the exact names for variations of pitchers but I do have a pitcher with similar markings.  Haven't seen a flower from that one this year.

Here is my first bloom on a newly purchased Sarracenia - catesbaei x oreophila.  This flower photo was taken about a month after I purchased it.  It just lost all its pollen (?).

I'm really interested if you could show more photos and details of your bog!  I'm a newbie at this and would love any tips on raising CP's.

Very cool RWinn!  Would you mind explaining your setup?  Does the waterfall go into a pond area?

yes the falls go to the pond, I have a 8500gph external pump running the whole thing. it sets on the ground behind the bog it has a 3" in and out (it moves a lot of water) mind you my pond is only 2300 gallons  ;D

Now I want to see the whole pond!  :D  Even though the water is streaming through the bog area your CP's are doing very well indeed!  O0

I would love to fit a bog with my ponds but unfortunately there would not be enough sun for CP's.  Only 2300 gals?!?  That's almost 2 times larger than my largest pond!  How depressing....

What a very nice big pond and surroundings.   O0  I envy your Japanese maple standing out in the open.  Too hot here in the summer so I have my pond in partial shade with the maples.  Your fence looks really nice too.

Do you have fish?  o(  With all your filtering I thought algae would be more controllable although I didn't see much in your photos.  Thanks for sharing!

Pretty cool....you've given me an idea....I have gnats literally just falling out of the sky right now, and they fall right through my screen...perhaps they would be a welcomed 'guest' if I had a plant like that.  ;) The lizards like them, but I don't. I have to sweep them up several times a day, since there are millions of them, and way more than the lizards can handle.

I love looking into the traps to see what kind of bugs fall for the traps.  I see lots of tiny like gnats and house flys and wasps.  :P  I see the flies hanging around the CPs too.  My DD says the pitchers have a strong smell when you get real close to them.  My sense of smell is not real keen but I believe the scent is what draws the flies.  O0
