Updated Hey Joyce - Tree ID Help Needed
« on: April 24, 2007, 09:29:33 PM »
I bought a tree at an arboretum sale last spring. It had no tag and no one seemed to know what it is. It is highly variegated in the spring. It was the way it looks in the photo when I bought it. In the summer it lost the variegation and was a solid green. In the last year it has doubled in size. It is about 5' tall now. It was just over 2' when I got it so it grows rather quickly at least in the last year.
Any ideas???

Tim

No clue, but I love the variegation (I'm a variegation junkie). It sure doesn't look like anything I've been here - I'm guessing it's needs a zone warmer than zone 7. Is it deciduous?

Yep, it's naked as a streaker in the wintertime.

Aralia elata 'Variegata' or a similar species/cultivar

I agree with LeeAnne. O0
Probably a variegated Devil's Walking Club/Stick.
Could be Aralia spinosa ‘V.F.N. Gold Strike’, Aralia elata ‘Aureo Variegata’ or Aralia elata ‘Silver Umbrellas’ .
My bet is with Aralia elata ‘Silver Umbrellas’.

Very hardy, through zone 5.

Fair Warning: Can be EXTREMELY invasive. :o

Well, I bought this in 06.
I posted the question in 07.
Now in 09 I have new info...
It has itty bitty flowers.
It is about 6 feet tall now.
Here are the small blooms.
They have a faint sweet scent.
Any ideas for sure?

The one I linked to has white flowers so it must be one of those that Joyce mentioned.
