Office Gardens & Pond Pix
« on: May 08, 2009, 07:35:24 AM »
Just took a walk about...

Kiwi is sprouting on the arbor by the lotus pond...

We have both a male and female kiwi plant, and this is the 3rd year, so we might finally get fruit.  :cheer:

Viburnum in bloom...smells fantastic!

And the lotus pond through crabapple blossoms...

IT'S SPRING!!!  @O@
Peace to all  ... Joyce

Beautiful!  That Viburnum is really nice.  And the Kiwi is fuzzy.

So that's what a Kiwi looks like when growing. Pretty cool looking and lovely pond and the Virburnum is growing great! You have a beautiful piece of property Joyce.

My dad had a Kiwi for years.
It used to produce so much fruit that he had a hard time finding enough people to give it all away to.
He got rid of it a few years ago. I can't remember why, but, I think it had something to do it taking over the yard. ;D

I've never even tasted a Kiwi. Are they sweet and juicy? Or are they like an avacado?

JW: Sweet & Juicy!  :D
And that's my office property, not my own house.  :)

Dale, this is growing all by itself in the middle of the lawn by the parking lot, on an arbor built just for it.
No chance of it taking over. At the Garden Center where I bought it, they had it on a HUGE pergola by itself, and that showed my what it's capable of.
That had several main trunks (4 corners: 2 female, 2 male) at least 8" caliper. :o

Thanks Sonny!  8)

I was looking to buy kiwi this year.  I have put it off for a few years and really want to do it.  Glad to know the fruit is really good.. wondered about that.

Remember, you need male and female plants.
My Kiwi's botanical name is Actinidia deliciosa.

Many people buy the Arctic Kiwi which has smaller, non-fuzzu fruit called Actinidia kolomikta.
Is hardier than Actinidia deliciosa. Has pretty pink and white variegated foliage once the plant is a few years old.
Need both male asnd female plants again.  :)

Joyce,  o(:-) I know I'm going to regret this, but I gotta ask what a few (many?) are thinking:

"How do you tell a boy kiwi plant from a girl kiwi plant"?

I think I'm on unnervingly firm ground when it comes to humans (I have schematic diagrams, somewhere...), but I'm sorta clueless on plants.

The male had a blue tag and the female had a red tag.  :-)~ :harhar:

Firm ground huh, so that's what you call it....  ;)

You're gonna trust a TAG?  Gads.  Isn't there something more specific, ala a "Crocodile Dundee" test? :)

lol roark

I been reading on them and about to change my mind.. 3 to 9 years before first fruit and it says if they get bit by frost they dont have fruit for that year.  Our area almost always has a warm spell followed by  the late frost.

I guess we'll have to wait until we see fruit.  ;)
The Kiwi's actually have pretty white fragrant blooms too.   8)

How do you perform a Croc Dundee test on a Kiwi Vine?  :D

Joyce Beautiful pictures, you are a bit ahead of us.  I was in the DC area the last of April babysitting a couple of the grandkids and it was so nice to leave the colder weather here (well it was then) and go somewhere where it was green and trees and flowers were blooming.
