Two big orandas
« on: April 26, 2008, 11:18:03 AM »
Well, maybe not that big... King Richard is about 9 inches long.
Both of my orandas are completely blind, which doesn't matter in an aquarium, because they can still find food by smell, and hear me coming to feed them.

I hesitated to post the aquarium photo, instead of the bowled photos. I know someone is going to tsk at me for keeping the aquarium sides covered with algae. But I do. The window I cut in the algae is six inches wide - appx. So its for the sizing.

Friday is about six inches long.
Also completely blind.

I know he's not a "true" red cap, because he's got streaks of red on his belly. But I've had him since he was about half an inch long... so he's a Bud.  @O@

Nice fishes.   :)  I let the algae grow in my aquarium too but I only let it go on the bottom and the back.  Makes for a great between meal snack.

Their wen, the growth on the head, has grown over their eyes.
Eventually I will have to trim the wen - but any surgery on a fish is problematic.

Makes sense, thanks! I didn't realize this was a common occurrence with these fish, but when I look closer I can see why.

Sav, I bought 3 fish at the louisville show.  Noticed one in the tank was deformed (head and gill plate) so mike gave him to me so he'd get a good hom.  Also threw in 2 that got injured, missing eyes.  I'll get some pics.  I love those little guys.

But I did get a red cap, thought about King Richard. o( o(

Wow, those are very cool fish. how long do those live, and how big will they get in the aquarium?
As far as the algae goes, I keep a pleco in mine to take care of that.

Well, ummm...  blush... Big Blue, my asagi, was measured two years ago at 35 1/2 inches. Course she's not in an aquarium.

The original King Richard was in a smaller tank, and got so big he had to jump out of the water to turn around. Poor thing, I didn't know better... and that was a long time ago.  {nono}

My dad is sending me some surgical scissors. I'm going to try trimming the wens on both King Richard II and Friday.

I love Orandas. Those two are pretty nice looking. Good luck with the wen trims, you're braver than I would be. ;D
I only have one Oranda right now, a red cap named Finley. :)

THe wen trim has been postponed. I don't want do to it when I have open cuts on my hands... something about those flesh eating bacterias, ya know?
Anyway, between paper cuts and gardening, I haven't had a weekend with cured hands.
I am looking forward to it, and will take phoots.  o(:-)
