Pitcher in Bloom!
« on: May 12, 2008, 01:40:10 PM »
Sarracenia flava is always my first pitcher to bloom.  Here it is this year in wet gravel right against the pond:

Several other species/varieties have buds, but flava is always first.  The Venus Fly Traps are also sending up bloom stalks; hopefully I'll have pictures of them soon!

That is a very bold color flower.  I'm interested in Sarracenias.  When I get stuff settled I will look into them.  Nice picture.  Hope you share some of your other pitcher plants soon too.

Steve, my sarracenia bloomed this year for the first time...I kept waiting for the flower to turn upright, but it never did...is that typical?

Argos5:

That is beatiful!  My flowers tend to droop until the petals (the part hanging down) dry up and seeds start developing.  Here is a pic of the same plant in my first post taken yesterday, about one week after the first:

They will stay in this position til I cut them off when they get ugly in about a month.

GREAT pix Steve!  O0
The blooms always hang, never turn upright.
Where do you live in NC?
We used to live near Camp Lejeune, and Pitcher Plants were native grew wild all around our house in Midway Park.
There were red ones aka Sarracenia purpurea, yellow ones aka Sarracenia flava, Venus Flay Traps (Dionea muscipula),
Yellow Butterwort (Pinguicula lutea), Blueflower Butterwort (Pinguicula caerulea), Small Butterwort (Pinguicula pumila),
Roundleaf Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and Yellow Bladderwort aka Utricularia olivacea. (and that's not all of them!)

I used to 'rescue' plants, including a lot of native swamp orchids too.  8)
When the roadside mowers used to mow the ditches and all these plants growing in them,
it made me sick!  :'(
Peace to all  ... Joyce

Joyce:

I actually live in Eden (pretty good home for an avid gardener, huh?, it is right outside of Greensboro), but it is funny you mention Camp Lejeune-I have spent the day there on business and am right outside the base as I type this!  You are right, This area is a bonanza for this group of plants.  I also did some preservation work on some of the limited wild Dionaea populations just south of Wilmington when I was in college.  I loved the work, but it makes you appreciate what damage poachers can do-locals were reluctant to tell us, even as university researchers, where the wild populations were.  I have not visited any of the sites I worked since the 80's-I hope they are still there!

Good for you on the rescue work-I am going to do the same with a group on a 30 acre tract near Asheville this fall.  There is a great wild azalea population in the way of a housing development that breaks ground next year.  I hope to get to keep a few specimens for my collection (the NC Arboretum is getting the pick of the litter).

I put mine in a floating planter and it has done very well...they can also be planted in a pond which has a "bog" area.

Howell, they are commonly called "floating island planters" and you can buy them through the internet...water seeps into the planter through holes in the bottom and keeps the soil quite moist.

Very nice photos. Ours have trouble overwintering outside here in Ohio. Its just too cold for the species we grow (judith hindle, dana's delight, and scarlet bell).
