putting a pond in
« on: April 11, 2010, 09:31:46 AM »
hi all im looking for some feedback and ideas. im going to be putting in a pond. ive beed reading alot on this site and others because good planning is half of the job.
1st. im putting in a small wall that will be flower beds and my pond what im wondering about is the wall will be about 2 ft high thus not have too dig 2 ft of however deep ill go
ill be getting fill dirt to fill the flower beds and to fill around the pond What kind of compaction do i need to do on the dirt? my dirt here is more rock than anything and already hate rocks and havent even started my pond.i hope the pics came out 1 is  the wall and the 2nd is where i want my pond. i thinking of going somewhere around 4 ft deep and have something like a smaller pond that feeds the big 1 so i can have plants in that 1.

With that large wall behind your pond you have a great area to build up heigth for a waterfall and an area to conceal your filter, pump and the like.
Instead of 2 ponds, upper and lower, how about 1 shallow then going deeper. you can block access to the shallow for  bit until your plants become established. Later it will give a great spot for the little guys to hide.

Bog areas right next to the wall will allow some large marginals to soften that wall.

All together now;  "Make it bigger, make it bigger, make it..."

Your question about compacting the soil is referring to where your pond will be, correct?  If you are using a rubber liner, I wouldn't worry about soil compaction.  Just don't trim the edges of you liner until the weight of the water on top of the liner has done the soil compaction for you.  -Mike
