God bugs

Asellus  Aquaticus? or Water Slater? Been following a utah poster on this bug, WOW, he has them in his BioFilter and they are amazing. His water is awesome. The little critters live in the chamber with the pads and work to clean them. Becoming active at 40*. To cool. Now I just need to find some for my Biofilter. His filter is called an Asellus filter! Anyone know of this little workhorse?

I only know of the beneficial bacteria that wake up when the water gets warmer in the spring.  Sure would be nice to know about this bug!

If you use the bug instead of the beneficial bacteria how do you clean out the filter material?

The bugs work with the filter not against it, They do not eat the beneficial bacteria they work with it.

You have me very interested! I love my pond but not cleaning the filter weekly will be a benefit! I did a search and found some on bizrate from Ward's Natural Science. $24.95 for 45 of the little creatures! How many do you think it will take? 200??? (2000 gal.pond)
Though I don't really want to change my filter, and I really dont have the room, I am thinking of putting a screen over the out pipe to keep them in and giving it a try!

Hi again PondLady,

I did a google on the Asellus aquaticus bug, and came up with some good information. What I couldn't find was more information about their habitat. I guess I will wading in the local stream to see what I can catch in a net this spring.

Would you happen to know if I would put these bugs in my boi-filter or in my pond or both? It seems as though it would be real easy to interupt their ecosystem and accidentally kill them off in a man made pond.

I'm always a little nervous about disturbing things around my pond because of the frogs hybernating(sp), those little red worms in my filter medium, and so on.

Sorry for no posting for a while. {Dh is fighting 2 Cancers} I got my info from ramcat on utahpondtalk He has them in his filters and loves them. I am listing an address I hope it is still a working one. He can probly give you better info than I can.
