Hardy & Tropical lilies wanted
« on: May 24, 2009, 07:15:58 AM »
After babying my hardy lilies all winter in a shallow kiddie pool in the garage during a new lily pond build, last week a raccoon dug up the tubers.  >:(

I only have 5 hours of sun in zone 6 so I need shade tolerant varieties.

Anyone selling bloom-this-year sizes of...

Texas Dawn?

Also thought I'd try tropicals for the first time:

Director George T Moore?

Albert Greenberg?

Trudy Slocum (NB)?

 THANKS!

I don't currently have any divisions of these to offer, but I have found that Attraction, Commanche, and Chromatella have bloomed well for me in limited sun, so I would suggest those for you if you run across them :)

I've found that my Rhonda Kay, Albert Greenberg, & Hoku Kea bloom fine with about 4 hours of sunlight.  I'm going to put a Miami Rose in that pond this year to find out how well she does in the same situation.  Not sure how well nightbloomers do in partial shade.  Blues & some viviparous lilies are known to be more tolerant of partial shade.

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

I've read that Dauben is tolerant of partial sun and James Brydon for a hardy.

Thanks all. I'll add those to my lists. I have read the following are 4-5 hr shade tolerant (but it may only be 'marketing talk'  ;)):

Hardy: Comanche, Virginia, Texas Dawn, Charlene Strawn (I think this is the one the raccoons ate -- a piece may still be viable), Chromatella, James Brydon, Attraction

Tropical: Albert Greenberg, Panama Pacific, Tina, Director Moore, Shirly Byrne (blues in general are supposed to be more shade tolerant) Rhoda Kay, Dauben, Hoku Kea

Night Bloomers: Trudy Slocum, Mrs. EG Hutchings

I've learned a valuable waterlily lesson for next year: PREORDER EARLY!  :)

According to Helen Nash in her book "The Pond Doctor" she lists the following lilies as good performers in only 3 to 5 hours of direct sun:

Hardies:  Hal Miller, Masaniello, Chromatella, Attraction, Escarboucle, Froebeli, Comanche, Paul Hariot, and Chrysantha

Tropicals:  Director George T. Moore, Isabelle Pring, and she also notes that "blue varieties in general are more tolerant of less than ideal conditions."

Hope this helps :)

Hi. I have Texas Dawn. Nice sized plant that should bloom this year. I also have Charlene Strawn and some of the other hardy lilies you mentioned. In the trops, I have Director George Moore, and Rhonda Kaye. Email me or PM me if interested.

Unfortunately I just got home from a 15 hour day.
I have to be back in 9 hours for a major visit from corporate brass.

Still no days off... so check out my website, let me know what you want and if I get any time off in the next couple of days I will check what is blooming for sure.

P.S. Night bloomers need lots of sun and lots of heat or they won't bloom worth a darn.

I probably have almost all of those below that are or very soon will be available at a blooming size.

Hardy: Comanche, Virginia, Texas Dawn, Chromatella, James Brydon, Attraction

Tropical: Albert Greenberg, Panama Pacific, Tina, Director Moore, Shirley Bryne, Rhonda Kay, Dauben, Hoku Kea
