Penny wort in filter
« on: May 31, 2009, 12:16:04 PM »
In our old pond we had a wine barrel as a filter.  In the new pond we are putting a 70 gallon stock tank.  The penny wort in the old filter did VERY well and when we went to pull out the penny wort and the old sponges to put in the new sponges it has COMPLETELY taken over the wine barrel.  I was planning on putting this in the stock tank.  Is that going to be a problem if it over takes the stock tank?

Thanks!

Just thin it out as it grows larger than you want it to be.  That stuff grows like a weed, an pulling some out and tossing it won't hurt it a bit.

After cutting the roots off from the filter pads I had throw it out, the pads that is.  Filter pads are not cheap.  :(  Didn't do that again.

Do you put any plants in the filter at all?

I used to put the plants in the filter box over the flitration media but since the mess of roots - beautiful plants I may add - I decide not to go that route any more.  Then I had the water a cleaned filter box cycle into a barrel with a waterfall, full of plants, before re-entering the pond.  Worked well.   O0

I am not doing that now until I rework the pond, koi pond.
