Got a new one.
« on: June 03, 2009, 01:59:22 PM »
A neighbor stopped by and said that someone told him that Koi have to freeze during the winter to be able to survive. UM, anybody heard of this or any variation of this?

I hope his ignorance is bliss to someone..but certainly not Koi!

Now that said they are better off if they have SOME cooling in the cold months especially the big girls as it helps them absorb eggs and to prevent them becoming eggbound.  Temperatures below 50 and no food.  Some will even fast their fish for 4-6 weeks to simulate this even if their water temps don't get below 50.

I actually thought about that for a slight second.  Then realized it is not possible.  Bring back the dead kind of thing.  Did you set him straight?

OMG, that is the most bizzar thing I've heard!!!  Hope you set him straight.
Mary thanks for that info.........with the very cold winter we had this year, do you think that may be why my females seem so light this year, even spawning has been a little at a time instead of the huge amount last year.

I did tell him that I had been on two reputable forums for 7-8 years and those forums have members everywhere from professional Koi breeders and sellers to people with a goldfish in a pot on their deck and I have never heard of anything like this before. I wanted to tell him that the best thing to do with a fish after it has been frozen is to fry it but I didn't. I also told him that we euthanize our fish by putting them in the freezer and hoped he got the word. Maybe that is what happened to my fish last winter. Maybe they committed suicide because I didn't treat them right by putting them in the freezer.

Oh dear. :D I don't know where people get some of this goofy stuff.
My boss thought the same thing about goldfish. When they bought their house it had a preform pond in the yard and it had goldfish. I asked him what he was doing with them for the winter and he asked me "why?" I said "well, they'll freeze if you don't bring them in or heat the pond." He said "Oh I know they will freeze but they will come back in the spring." I said "Um, no they won't. It will kill them." He went on to tell me that goldfish will survive and they will be fine. I rolled my eyes and gave up on him. Then when spring came and the pond thawed out the goldfish were all dead.  ::)
Some people just have no common sense. ::)
