Tao of the backhoe
« on: June 09, 2009, 03:22:56 PM »
There is a grace to heavy machinery that belies its strength.
From working on a backhoe - I have learned these philosophical lessons:

No. 1 - don't bite off more than you can lift.
No. 2 - clean up your mess before you move on.
No. 3 - moving is troublesome and time consuming.
No. 4 - Its easier to dig a hole than get out of it.

Yes, but it beats digging by hand.  Why look - you've got a hole, and water in it already!

Pink Ribbon is going to be VERY happy in her new pond.  You don't have to line it or pack it down?  The dirt/clay holds the water?

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

While Savannah was digging with the backhoe, I was moving dirt with the Deere loader into the rear pasture.  So the gate between the rear pasture and the yard was open.  Predictably, the cattle came out and had to see what was going-on.  (No biggie that, because we routinely turn them loose when the grass needs "mowing" anyway).  So as I'm shuttling back and forth, I'm keeping an eye on the critters.  As I came back for another load, Ginger (big female, preggers and ready to drop) is eyeball to eyeball with the new pond.  Curious.  Wanted to go for a swim... but didn't realize the sides were **vertical**.  In she goes with a monster splash.  The resulting tidal wave took about 5 inches of water out of the pond and into the yard.

Too funny.  Not only does Savannah have a pond-fetish... so do her cows. :)

Joyce: If ya'll come for a summer visit, tell Jamie she'll have a new-born calf to play with.  I'd give Ginger about 2 more days before she adds another to the herd.  @O@

Julles:  We found a way to quickly gather "organics" for you, next time you're down here.  We put Roark Junior on the tractor with the boxblade and turn him loose.  It takes about 5 minutes to get 50 lbs of your favorite fertilizer.  Bring a few bags and I'll load 'em for ya!  Cattle poops grow some *monster* Pink Ribbons!

When we come again it will be in the late fall, when it cools down a bit there.
Not into the hot and humid torture.   :(
Did that for 7 years in NC and not going there again. {nono}

Jamie and I can't wait to see y'all again....Julles and Jim too!  8)

Yeah, dried out cow pies were used as a potting soil additive when I potted up Pink Ribbon for Savannah.
Looks like they worked wonders.  8)
But now that you've said it, someone will misinterpret, use fresh poop and post nasty grams at me here when it goes sour.
Never fails. Nothing is FOOL proof.  ::)  ;)  lol

The pink ribbon has been a bloom machine. Then it rested, and I was thinking it was space limited. So we went ahead and built the pond. The first effort anyway, I already have changes in mind. :)

I had one BEEG pot of tall lotus. One small pot of small lotus. One small pot with the pink ribbon. So I dragged them into the pond bottom. When Ginger took her belly flop - the two pots of lotus floated around. The pots are almost weightless in the water. So it gave me an excuse to relocate them again.

The photo you see was taken after one day - the stems of the pink ribbon and small lotus had not yet adjusted. They have now. The plants are a little shocked - the water is cooler and less fertile. But they will come back with enthusiasm when the water warms up.

The natural clay holds water easy enough. To make the bottom more lily friendly, I saved out the sod - the top inch or two of soil with the grass and grass roots, and lined the bottom with the sod. Its a better quality dirt, and the grass will die and make goo for the benefit of the lilies.

Next weekend, I am going to expand the edges by about eight inches, and dig out a ledge all the way around, one shovel deep. For water iris. :)

And there is a place for some kinda tree.  o(:-)
And I'm already playing with the placement of a bridge. :)

Every project is just a good start on other projects.  @O@

Roark did do a lot of tractor work. But you see that blue chair in the first photo? That's where Roark was supervising the digging... (snicker).  lol

Hey Julles -
My friend Butch, who loaned me the backhoe, says he has a barn that needs to be cleaned out. Horse and donkey poop about four inches deep. Dried.

Nice work Savannah! We dig ponds with a Cat. Dh tries to talk me into operating the cat but so far it's a no go. I just think he does a far better job.
Your lilies will be happy in those ponds. I see you get lots of help from you 4 legged friends. We have a pup that loves to help out too.

If the pond has verticle sides, how did the cow get back out?

One of the ponds on the tour was in Manvel, not too far from Danbury.  Shoulda cleaned the tools out from the back of the van and brought some bags to do a little collecting....

The pond is only about three feet deep. She didn't have any trouble getting out.  lol
She had a very cat-like expression, too. Like: Did anyone see that? I MEANT to do that...

Savannah, I see you have been busy, how nice to be able to dig with large machinery that saves the back.  It looks nice and I will be waiting to see the blooms.
