One of my favorite yellows
« on: June 12, 2009, 07:19:17 PM »
This is a really great yellow in my opinion. It has widely spaced big leaves a foot or more in dia. showing lots of water and a flower that's 11 inches in dia. You will just have to take my word on that.  I measured it but I couldnt hold the ruler and the flower and take a pic while standing on a slippery slope crotch deep in water.
This plant is still not fully established in it's spot since transplanting late last year and I believe it's capable of making a 12 inch flower in the future. This is a normal size flower for this plant all year long, starts early and ends late, good bloomer.
It has the most consistently biggest flower of any plant I have at this point.
It needs more evaluation over time, but for me it's a keeper.

Mike, is that a cross? If so, may I ask what the parents were? Please. :)
Happy ponding,

Mike,
Get a plastic ruler.
That way it can set on the pad, float on the water, float just below the flower etc.
That is what I do when I need specific size relation in a pic.
You can also take a blank CD (Or a scratched up one) panit it a bright color like red, blue or yellow so you can also show size.
Almost everyone can envision the size of a CD.

Was this a cross through Moon Dance or Virginia?
They both are big and have that general shape.
If not, do you have odorata var. gigantea the species to get such big progeny?
Inquiring minds want to know...

Beautiful for sure.   O0   I'll bet the folks with the great big ponds will be wild for that one.

Lovely and are all these lilies tropical or hardies?

I don't know what it's parents are exactly, I would have to go and dig up it's tag but I can tell you that it's probably a number and letter code for the pod parent and the pollen parent is probably unknown and the pod parent was a mexicana cross  plant from several possibilities. the way I do things is I plant a seedling in a one gallon mum pan, I bought 1500 of them, and set it in the pond and the plant quickly grows out of the pot and into the dirt around the pot.
The pot holds the tag with it's plant. The plant is in an early evaluation bed. and if it shows promise I pick up the pot as I uproot the part that has grown roots into the pond and take it to a spot where it will grow out for a second evaluation for a couple of years and I give it a number which is different than the code for it's ID that is buried in the pot. That is where this plant stands now.
so what this means is that until I decide to through it away or divide it up for propagation I don't disturb the pot with the tag and don't really know who the parents are.  Although I might have an idea generally.
There are times that I wish I didn't mix pollens so much but it really saves time.

I don't have Odorata gigantica and I want one. I have Virgina and as far as I can tell it is sterile, both pod and pollen, although I gave up on it years ago I may now have a plant that it will cross with now so I guess it COULD have Virgina as a pollen parent but I doubt it. I don't have moon dance yet.

It's not that big of a plant Emm, no more than 5 or 6 ft spread I think, not very many leaves or crowns. so it should not crowd other plants to much with other plants with similar open leaf structure. There is enough space between leaves to allow intermingling with an other plant.

That is a good idea Tim about floating a ruler below a floating flower.  It's also a good idea to stand as far away as you can when taking the pic and zoom in to avoid parallax.
I think my clear 15 in ruler that you barely see in a pic on " unusual leaves " thread would sink. A 12 IN. wooden ruler would float and be more familiar, being 12 IN.
I was about to fall in deep water with my camera when I took that pic and just couldn't;t handle a sinking ruler even though I had one there and had just used it to measure it at 11 in.
And I think I could have gotten a wider measurement if I had looked for the longest two opposing petals to measure by.  Maybe 11 and one half in. if I had done that.
I didn't want to pick it because I'm trying to get every seed I can from it.

These plants are all hardies.  I have very few tropicals.
