Not Getting Vips this Year

Last year my purple lily was producing vips like crazy, and I had little McDonalds' cups full of baby lily starts all over the place.

This year, I have more blooms (remembering to fertilize helps  ).  But the pads are not creating the vips like they did last year.

I'm not unhappy, because I have enough lilies, and don't really want to mess with raising little baby starts.  But I'm curious as to why one year there would be vips, but in the plant's second year, very few vips.

Some years mine don't vip well. Sometimes they do later in the year. You just never know.
