Fun Weekend, but sore, tired, aching....ready to go again!

Last week, my best friend's wife suggested that he take me to Glamis (desert - sand dunes hot spot) for the weekend and she said I could drive her sand rail.  Very generous, considering I've never driven one, but have been to the desert on quads/dirt bikes.  We had a blast!  It was awesome, now I want one!  lol  but I have to wait.

I asked one of the more experienced drivers how I did as a virgin and he said he had no idea I'd never driven one...he said, "you looked like you knew what you were doing, I didn't know it was your first time!".   So that was a nice compliment coming from a guy with an $80k+ sand rail!  (yeah...80 grand is what some of these people have invested in their sand rails!)

So I did well, came back sore, sandy, tired and aching to go back!

Ah yes, kind of like a dune buggy, huh?  Surely goes fast enough to hurt you really bad, but that's what makes them so much fun!  Remember, my daughter is healing from an accident on a 4-wheeler--I know that's a buzz kill, but I want you to remember you are only flesh and blood... {:-P;;

yeah, they can be dangerous if you're not careful, sometimes even if you are.  But we do take every precaution: full harnesses, full cage, and despite my inexperience the leader didn't "show off" (nor did the others) and didn't regret having to wait for me a couple times when I got stuck.  Hanging with this group was so much better than the derelicts I used to run with.  These guys are all very responsible and "older and wiser" if that's acceptable.

We had a discussion about "dune buggy" vs "sand rail".  I think we sort of agreed that a dune buggy can be licensed for the street, a sand rail cannot.  Usually a dune buggy has a fiberglass body around it, too.  Sand rails: paddle tires, full cage, and lots-o-fun.  I won't do things I know I can't and we didn't go places that were dangerous (like over a razorback or something like that.

It was fun....thanks for the concern!

That's great you had an enjoyable weekend.  Is it your kidneys that hurt?  With your automotive experience I can see you building a sand rail in the near future.

Before I ever got to Annette's comments I had the same concerns as I know of people who also have been hurt.  The main concern I would have would be of other fools out there on a crowded holiday weekend.  I imagine nothing is quite as scary as seeing a 2,000 pound hunk of metal flying over the top of a ridge coming right at you....  :o

That's what I like about the rails and the buggy:  they have harnesses and roll bars.  Very rarely do you ever see anyone with a helmet on a 4 wheeler...we use them on the farm all the time and we tend to get to comfortable on them.  Of course even when we ARE racing around on the back forty, we tend not to wear them either so....there have been more accidents and deaths on 4 wheelers around here than I ever remember before. 

There was a guy (fellow farmer) who hopped on his to meet some other guys at their house to watch a football game--he hit a culvert, flipped him off and into a telephone pole:  that's where they found him when he didn't show up to the game.  Laying there like he was asleep, killed instantly.  My daughter had broken bones but no cuts, bruises and is almost healed, while this guy left 3 children behind...none of it makes sense, but it sure makes me think when I hop on that thing.   :)

No, Mikey, I'm just sore from all the work we did!  First guy got his truck/trailer stuck in the sand.  Then we went in and we got stuck.  Then the third guy went in with his lifted truck and 48 foot trailer and lo and behold...he got stuck!  We all were up until about 2 am digging the trucks out of the sand and trying everything to move the trailers.  Then another friend (brother of my friend) showed up and moved all the trailers like it was on pavement! 

The ride wasn't too bad, we didn't do a lot of jumping or crowded areas.  I have been to Glamis on a holiday weekend and decided it's not for me...too much stupidity.  This is what I like about off roading: you don't have to keep going if you see another person close by...you can stop, go the other way, wait til he passes...whatever you desire...and nobody gives you a ticket for it!  lol  Of course, doing so reasonably and rationally is important.  But I don't care to go places I know I shouldn't, or try things I know I can't do.

LuAnn - yes, it's sad that people don't wear helmets.  I had a friend who always said, "I'm just going to the store".  As if accidents only happen when you're going somewhere else, further away!  We didn't wear helmets being strapped inside the cars and having a full cage around us, but if I was planning on jumping or going mach 2 then I'd wear one.  Our rides were mellow...lots of fun still.

I've been down riding my dirtbike, and I was so glad I was wearing a helmet one day when I bashed into a rock with the side of my head.  It rung my bell, but I was wearing a full face, approved helmet and it sold me!  I never ride on the street without one, not even "to the store".

I can't imagine getting myself shaken and jerked around like that.  I feel achy terrible after being driven in my son's car....and he says he's careful.  >:(  Did I tell you how he decided to "own" an on ramp rail on the 405 one car ago?

Esther - ever hear of a saying that goes like this:

"speed costs money....how fast do you want to go?"

That's pretty much why.  These days, sand rails have all the best equipment, best trick suspension parts, chromed out turbocharged V8 engines and all the go-fast goodies you can find.
It's almost like the person who buys a hummer and puts thousands into it, yet it never even sees the dirt.  Many of these sand rail owners just want to impress others, and they hardly ever use the potential of the car.  I have a friend who has a 64 Plymouth with a $65,000 Keith Black aluminum Hemi that produces about 2500 horsepower.  He won't race it because he's afraid he might blow the engine.  So he trailers it to car shows, and impresses the snot out of onlookers.  lol 

I told my friend that I really don't care who's faster than I am.  All that means is that someone spent more money that I did.  I guess that's why I boast about my home projects...I didn't buy them, I labored over them.  To me, pride doesn't have a $ sign. 

Hmmm...hope I didn't offend anyone with that, not my intention....I guess you just do what you can with what you got since I'm pretty much broke all the time! lol

Well, Julles, I think the first part is if you just enjoy off roading.  Since I've ridden dirt bikes and quads for decades, I already enjoy it, so that's helpful.  But many do get hooked on it their first time out, as well.

It's very soft sand so the bumps aren't too bad, especially with a good suspension.  You'd think that you'd have a hard time in the sand but you have paddle tires that give you good traction and with some momentum you can climb hills and ride the bowls and it's a blast (youtube video link).  Some of the buggies/rails can achieve over 100 mph with ease, the fastest I got to was probably about 70 or so.  There was a huge bowl (pretty much just like it sounds) and you ride around it and you can get up a lot of speed and climb to the top.  The video shows how it's done.

The drawbacks?  Sand...lots of it and in places you didn't know you had on your body.  I think when I showered I lost about .3 lbs from the sand washing out of my hair and such! lol

The hills are all dunes from the wind shifting the sand, and there are lots of hills.  To get to a particular hill you can't just drive straight there because when the sand is blown around it creates razorbacks/ridges, and they can be dangerous because you don't know how steep the other side is, or how far down.  The first pic shows how the wind can create these ridges, so unless you know what's on the other side you cross it at an angle so you can get over at a lower speed.  Straight up and you need speed and it's a long drop, so angling over is best.  We typically follow the leader (an experienced driver who knows his way around) and that made it a better time for me as a beginner because I didn't have to try to keep up with everyone.  Safety first...never leave anyone behind!
