Five dead birds
« on: August 17, 2009, 07:58:33 PM »
I installed my pond in the spring/summer of 2002, and up until this year I've had maybe one or two birds drown in the pond that whole time.  This year I've found five that have drown.   :'(   This is troubling me, and I'm wondering if anyone else has experience this higher than normal drowning rate.

Thanks,

Never had a drowning since 2001. Do you have killer fish?

Brian, finding dead birds in my pond means only one thing...bullfrogs.
They catch the birds, try to swallow them which drowns them,
and finally spit them out when they can't choke 'em down.

Only when I net for leaves, which I do for only a short time in the fall.  I hate it when I find one... :'(

I've never found a dead bird in any of my ponds.

No killer fish!
I have not seen (or heard) a bullfrog in my pond ever.  I've only got the black frogs with the green head, and the largest is only about 3 -3.5 inches from nose to butt when sitting, and when I do get tadpoles, they're very small.  I don't know if they're playing in the waterfall and getting swept in or not.  I've only netted the pond once, but that was about 3 years ago in the fall.

Thanks everyone!

Brian, I've seen people put driftwood branches, or just old deadwood branches in the pond,
bridging the water with the rock edge, so any creature that falls in can get out.
Maybe you should do that somewhere near the waterfall?

Poor things I would be really sad to find one in my pond  :'(. I think mine is set up pretty good so they could get out but what if they fall in the middle.........can they swim or manage somehow to get to the rocky edge?

I never really thought about it, but could a bird drown by getting too wet and heavy?  I get lots of birds in my falls, and every so often they try to land on lily pads.  As soon as they start to sink they fly off.  Could that be it?
