Fish babies!!!!!
« on: September 03, 2009, 12:21:52 PM »
I am so excited!!!!  :D Today I found babies in the pond! Teenie, tiny babies! I wonder if they are koi or goldfish!?  @O@. I fished some out but when my husband got home he made me put them back, saying we already had enough pets inside and too many tanks! LOL!

Well we do already have a 90 and 180 gal african cichlid tank, a 75 gal community tank and a 40 gal cube with mismatch fish who can not live in the tanks they belong in! LOL!....then there are the 3 cats and 2 dogs. Hubby does do all the water changes so I understand his concern with me creating more tanks  :-\. The babies are just clear looking and only about half an inch being the biggest, othere less than half an inch...do koi and goldie babies look different? In my old pond I fished them out so they didn't get eaten  :'(. Do you think they will survive if I leave them in? My pond is about 1000 gallons with not much plant growth at all. BUT right now there is a ton of string algea clumps maybe they can hide in. What do the babies eat anyway algea?

Baby fish eat anything small enough. Mostly microscopic creatures such as daphnia, shrimps, and tiny crustaceans. They also eat single cell algae and fish food crumbs.
Happy ponding,

if they are koi babies they will tend to grow a bit faster and color up sometimes sooner (shubunkins will also sometimes color faster then goldfish)...although I have koi babies from last year that are still a grayish brown.  A sure fire way to tell if they are koi is if they have the barbels (whiskers) goldfish do not have them, but they have to be large enough so you can see them.  More likely then not they are goldfish babies, they breed better, but one can not tell for sure with out a close inspection, I thought  those 2 of mine were goldfish and almost culled them.

If you leave them in the pond, most of them will be eaten.  But there will usually be a couple who manage to hide out until they grow to a safe size.  Then, one day, you'll be feeding the fish and all of a sudden notice a fishie you had never seen before - that will be one of your babies.

I have several in my pond right now.  The goldfish are better at hiding and surviving.  The koi babies I have, they survived because I scooped out the eggs (clinging to the hornwort and the spawning mat) and raised them in a seperate tub.
